PURPOSE OF JOB:


The job holder will work in a new COVID-19 Lighthouse Testing Laboratory, forming part of NHS Test and Trace and managed by Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS).

BSPS is a large and established pathology network operating across Royal Berkshire,Royal Surrey, Frimley Health and Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trusts.


The post holder will:

  • Assist in the preparation of COVID19 analytical work by receiving, labelling and entering pathology specimen requests onto the laboratory computer system under supervision of a team leader
  • Required to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times

Required to communicate with pathology staff, hospital staff, porters, drivers and couriers

Shift Pattern:

The shift pattern for this role will be 3 days on, 3 days off

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical and Clinical Responsibilities

  • To assist in the departmental work as instructed, following SOPs under the supervision of the site laboratory managers, training officers/trainers, team leaders and / or scientific staff
  • Receipt of COVID19 testing samples into the department from transport services
  • Unpacks samples and checks that they are intact, suitable for testing and appropriately labelled with tracking barcodes, raising any problems with a senior colleague where necessary
  • Enters the sample details into the laboratory computer systems
  • To keep the laboratory manager informed of all matters regarding laboratory procedures and help with the smooth running of the department, to minimise errors and maximise efficiency through agreed priorities and to achieve testing targets.
  • Following SOPs, undertake waste disposal of laboratory samples and used consumables (including the operation of an autoclave if required)
  • Assist in monitoring stock control of consumables held in stores
  • Regular and thorough cleaning of equipment and work benches, complying with SOPs
  • To inform a team leader, section head or scientist of any equipment problems
  • To understand and acknowledge limits of capability and seek advice as appropriate
  • To participate in the training and assessments for specified areas of the laboratory
  • To complete programmes to a satisfactory level of competence in order to support all areas under supervision
  • To ensure the safety of staff, visitors, and the department by checking that Risk Assessment, COSHH and Local Rules are followed and to inform the laboratory manager of any potential risks
  • Works in cooperation with scientific staff to ensure workload is processed in a timely and efficient manner

Role Responsibilities

  • Works to achieve competencies across the repertoire of the department as appropriate to grade
  • Communicates effectively with other staff groups both internal and external, including healthcare professionals, transport and portering staff
  • Displays and maintains an appropriate level of IT skills. Is able to input sample data, interrogate the laboratory databases and perform basic word processing and spreadsheet work
  • Performs a range of administrative tasks in all sections of the laboratory as required. This includes archiving and retrieval of specimens and data, maintenance of archived material and audit trails
  • Ensures efficient use of resources and is aware of stock levels and rotation, storage conditions, batch numbers and expiry dates, thus ensuring the viability of reagents
  • Ensures appropriate stock levels are maintained in own area of operation, this may include issuing stock to external departments and GP surgeries
  • Ensures accurate stock records are maintained
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment through good laboratory practice. This may include disposal of clinical waste, autoclaving, decontamination processes.
  • Aware of Clinical Governance, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and local Health and Safety policies, including use of Personal Protective Equipment, reporting problems, errors or breaches to the Site Manager or Senior scientific staff
  • To answer telephone calls and deal with messages and enquiries

Other Responsibilities

  • To receive all visitors to the laboratory in a professional and courteous manner, complying with Trust security arrangements
  • Demonstrates excellent personal communication and team working skills
  • Complies with the requirement to practice within information governance, data protection and confidentiality guidelines
  • Works as part of a team to ensure that departmental performance targets are met by continually assessing priority of work
  • Participates in the Trust Personal Development Programme and works towards identified development needs
  • Attend all mandatory training courses
  • Attends and participates in BSPS, Lighthouse Laboratory and Trust staff meetings as appropriate and demonstrates a positive attitude to these
  • Provides training support and assistance to new staff as appropriate (including the demonstration of procedures to less experienced staff)

General Responsibilities


To be aware of the inherent hazards of the work and to always take appropriate precautions, reporting to the Head Scientist or Safety Officer any accident or potential hazards.
