Salary: Starting at Living Wage of £12.00 per hour for one month probation period. After probation period, increasing to £14.00 per hour. Potential for further increase after three months and a range of bonuses.

Location: This role can be undertaken in a hybrid capacity, working remotely and from either our Bristol or Glasgow office.

Working hours: 24 hours per week, with scope for flexibility to increase/decrease at mutual consent. 

Start date: Starting on/around 1st August 2024.

The Arkbound Foundation is a literature and publishing charity, which seeks to support people from the most disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds to have their voices heard through writing.

As well as publishing books, we deliver 1-1 mentoring programmes that pair up aspiring writers with experienced authors, alongside workshops. Recognising those we work with often experience multiple overlapping disadvantages, our work seeks to address various issues, as well as crossing over into the environment. 

An opportunity has now arisen for a dedicated person, passionate about inclusive narratives and making a lasting positive difference, to join the charity. Ideally we would like someone with experience of publishing and project management, although we are open to considering others with the necessary skill sets. As a small charity with a sociocratic governance structure, we also welcome those who are capable of using their own initiative and to multi-task, whilst being mindful of deadlines. 

 

Key responsibilities

Book management

(6-8 books per year) from submission to publication, with tasks including:

Budget creation and setting crowdfunding targets (please see www.crowdbound.org to see our Crowdbound model).Planning publication processes and timelines.Engaging with enquiries to Crowdbound and helping to create campaigns where eligible.Assisting authors with Crowdbound campaigns. Helping to organise editing and proofreading.Document creation - AI sheets and press releases.Author management - gathering initial materials (blurb, author bio and author photo) and editing where necessary. Primary author contact point throughout the publishing process and oversight of their promotional work and launch planning, supporting where possible.Liaising with designers and overseeing the book cover design and interior formatting stages of the publication process.Publishing books on our websites and Amazon KDP (including ebook).Admin coordination, including publishing agreements, invoices, author royalties, publishing agreements, dealing with main publishing account email (hello@arkbound.com)Metadata logging – registration of book and updating using ONIX, ensuring details are fully up to date with Nielsen and distributor, fully visible to retailers.Coordinating print runs for books and organising the printing and delivery of promotional materials.Coordinating promotional activities, including creating a collaborative promotional plan with authors, utilising existing and new promotional channels.Reviewing prizes and awards – assisting authors with identifying outlets and making submissions.Proactively working to expand book sales in all markets and, where necessary, remaindering.Expanding revenue through selling publishing rights overseas.Oversee development of a book club/membership scheme and associated ideas to improve income.Encouraging a positive author experience and building reputation of the publisher by facilitating online reviews.Facilitating new partnerships and collaborations with other publishing and literature charities.

Other

The organisation is a small charity and the postholder is also encouraged and welcome to assist with other areas, for increased hours, such as:

Planning and managing mentoring, writing workshops and other writing development programmesDeveloping and delivering a creative writing course and mentoring programme as a new revenue source for the charity.Implementing a dedicated Literature Prize (‘the Zooker Award’) and regular writing competitions, overseeing all aspects with volunteers and other staff.Ensuring adequate and ongoing outreach to wider public and other organisations, to build awareness and reputation of charity.

 

Knowledge, skills and experience

A self-starter, with the enthusiasm and ability to take on new challenges and learn new skills, you will be able to provide evidence of the following:

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and ExcelNumeracy skillsThe ability  to communicate effectively with organisation members and third parties via email, in person, and on the telephoneExcellent time management and proven ability to meet deadlinesApplicants should be able to learn and understand new programmes and systems quickly
