Locum Consultant in Stroke Medicine

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking to appoint into a substantive post in the Department of Stroke Medicine at London North West based at Northwick Park Hospital.

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the LNWH NHS trust for a new consultant to work in our expanding stroke service. Main duties of the job

Currently this involves being on call from home with CTs available by telemedicine and occasional out of hours visits to the hospital, including the thrombolysis rota. To contribute a full share to the consultant ward rounds every weekend day and public holiday. This currently works out as 1:7 weekends. To work with the rest of the clinical and managerial team to support and deliver quality improvements on the Stroke Unit and in the community. To provide clinical input into the early supported discharge service, specialist stroke community initiatives and stroke follow up. To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training To participate in clinical and other service activities such as medical and service audit with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development To contribute to the development of clinical quality and effectiveness in other clinical areas where these overlap with developments in stroke To advance the Unit's research programme

About us

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) cares for the people of Brent, Ealing, Harrow and beyond.

Our team of more than 8,200 clinical and support staff serve a diverse population of almost one million people.

We run major acute services at:

Northwick Park Hospital: home to one of the busiest emergency departments (A& E) in the country. The hospital provides a full range of services including a highly rated hyper-acute stroke unit and one of only three hyper-acute rehabilitation units in the UK. St Mark's Hospital: an internationally renowned specialist centre for bowel disease Ealing Hospital: a busy district general hospital providing a range of clinical services, as well as 24/7 emergency department and urgent care centre, and specialist care at Meadow House Hospice Central Middlesex Hospital: our planned care site, hosting a range of surgical and outpatient services and collocated with an urgent care centre. We are a university teaching NHS trust, in recognition of the important role we play in training clinicians of the future and bringing the benefits of research to the public.

Job description
Job responsibilities

This is a 10 PA post (7.5 DCC, 2.5 SPA) in the Comprehensive Stroke Service. The calibre of the applicant is more important than their base specialty and we are looking for someone comprehensively trained in stroke medicine.

There is the potential for a clinical leadership role within the department for a suitable candidate with appropriate skills, support and training.

The Stroke Unit was set up under the London reorganisation of stroke in 2009 and operates to very strict audit and quality standards. We provide 24/7 thrombolysis and comprehensive rehabilitation with an early supported discharge team. Particular strengths of our service are our multi-disciplinary working and our commitment to research, recruiting to studies covering all stages of stroke.

The Unit has been consistently highly rated on the SSNAP audit and has won awards for its clinical leadership and research.

The appointee will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and post graduate teaching and be involved in the departmental audit and research.

Northwick Park is a large district teaching hospital in North West London. Transport links to the West End and the shires are excellent with local facilities and both private and public schooling among the best in the country.

Applicants should have full GMC registration and experience, evidence of specialist stroke training and a CCT in any stroke parent specialty or be close to their CCT date. Applications are welcomed from Doctors within 6 months of their CCT, or CESR in Stroke medicine, and existing consultants looking to relocate.
