Embark on an exhilarating journey with The Newt's Apprenticeship in Horticulture Immerse yourself in a hands-on experience that combines practical training and education, culminating in a Level 2 Work Based Diploma through Bridgwater and Taunton College. This apprenticeship is not just about learning-it's about inspiring and educating visitors while supporting the vital horticulture, science, and education functions of our beautiful Estate.

You'll work side-by-side with The Newt's expert horticulturists, taking an active role in nurturing and developing our diverse horticultural collections. From the stunning Visitor Attraction Gardens and serene Woodlands to the meticulous Plant Records, expansive wider estate, and vibrant nursery, every day brings new opportunities to grow your skills and make a lasting impact.

Key Responsibilities

Assist with various horticultural tasks in the garden, conservatory, nursery, and plant records, rotating with specified horticulture teams as part of your learning and development, working both in a team and individually to a standard agreed upon with your line manager. Maintain a positive approach in the workplace, give and receive feedback on work performance with your team leader or manager, and seek clarity to resolve any misunderstandings. Participate in the practical training program in the gardens, attend, and be assessed for the Level 2 Work Based Diploma qualification. Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety regulations and procedures, keeping issued equipment and machinery safe and secure. Engage and interact actively with visitors and colleagues, answering questions, providing guidance, and imparting knowledge to enhance The Newt's reputation as a leading garden attraction. Promote horticulture within other areas of the organisation, fostering a culture of collaboration and cooperation across all departments and functions. Assist in the preparation and delivery of horticultural talks, tours and demonstrations to visitors, colleagues, local officials, and external bodies as directed. Participate actively in professional societies and other organisations to share ideas, stay current on industry developments, and continuously monitor and improve cultivation practices, striving for horticultural excellence.

What we're looking for:

Education & qualifications

There are no formal qualifications required for this position; however, a good general education is desirable, to include at least 2 GCSEs including English, Mathematics (or equivalent). Ability to grasp information and apply recently gained knowledge - some evidence of recent learning.

Knowledge & Skills

The job holder will be required to have an intermediate level of IT skill. Ability to grasp information and apply recently gained knowledge. Sound computer skills - e.g. Emails, Web Browsing and Word.

Decision-making

Have sound judgment and be able to recognise the need for appropriate consultation, whilst suggesting range of solutions and contingencies.

Resourcefulness

Collaborates with colleagues and senior staff to devise innovative and creative ways to improve horticultural efficiency.

People & asset management

With guidance, organise daily work plans and be willing to try new areas of work.

Communication & visitor experience

Have effective communication skills, both written and verbal and must demonstrate a willingness to listen and learn. Be a supportive and effective team player and helpful to colleagues. Be friendly, polite, approachable, and helpful to visitors at all times.

Operational environment

The role regularly requires physical effort such as bending, lifting, and working in relatively confined spaces or in hot, cold or inclement weather.
