This is an exciting opportunity to join an expanding paediatric Hepatology department as we work towards building a new Childrens Hospital in Leeds.

The paediatric hepatology team provide a comprehensive range of tertiary paediatric hepatology services such as acute and chronic liver disease, portal hypertension, or intrahepatic lesions. Examples include acute liver failure, biliary disease or structural abnormalities, metabolic liver disease, viral hepatitis, autoimmune disorders, cystic fibrosis, NAFLD, congenital hepatic fibrosis, Wilsons disease.

Outreach clinics are currently provided with colleagues in Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle and Glasgow.

There is a multidisciplinary team of specialist clinical nurses, transplant coordinators, dieticians, pharmacist, social worker, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, psychologist, youth worker and play therapists.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a team of 4 consultants with a 1 in 5 on call requirement on a 10PA contract. There are opportunities to develop a specialised interest of the candidates choice.

The Paediatric Hepatology Department in Leeds is a National Specialist Service for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of children who have a wide range of acute and chronic liver disease, portal hypertension, or intrahepatic lesions. Examples include acute liver failure, biliary disease or structural abnormalities, metabolic liver disease, viral hepatitis, autoimmune disorders, cystic fibrosis, NAFLD, congenital hepatic fibrosis, Wilsons disease. The department has a close relationship with other specialties including cardiology, nephrology, haematology and oncology and rheumatology, for joint management of multisystem disorders.

The department receives approximately 300 new patients per year, and performs 20 transplants, of which an increasing number are from live donors.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will join the existing consultant team in delivering the specialist Paediatric Hepatology and Liver Transplant Service. The post holder will strive to ensure that the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust maintains and improves its standing nationally and delivers high quality patient care within the framework of the NHS.

The Paediatric Hepatology Consultant post will offer an exciting opportunity to work flexibly within the department. This will require a commitment to close team working so as to be able to offer timely interventions for patients. As well as having fixed clinical commitments, the post holder will contribute to the Annual team work plan to ensure the service is delivered continuously.

1.1 To deliver care to patients under the care of the Paediatric Hepatology team:

Out-patient clinics

Supervision of patients

Care of in-patients as part of a 1:5 on-call rota

Contribute to Specialist Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings

1.2 To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Childrens CSU and across the Trust.

1.3 To work with colleagues in Paediatric Hepatology to deliver acute on-call (1:5). This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.

1.4 To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Paediatric Hepatology department. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.

1.4.1 To take on and develop outreach clinics, as well as participating in the various general and sub- specialty hepatology out-patient clinics based on site at Leeds.

1.4.2 To assist the Paediatric Liver Transplant Surgeons and Paediatric Hepatobiliary Surgeon, in delivery of an emergency and elective hepatobiliary and liver transplant supra-regional service, as recommended by NHS England.

Outpatient clinics are run in the Paediatric Outpatient Department of Leeds Childrens Hospital at Leeds General Infirmary. In addition to General Hepatology clinics, there are weekly transplant clinics and subspecialty clinics in metabolic liver disease, viral hepatitis, NAFLD and transition.

Facilities

Paediatric Hepatology inpatients are in ward L50, Clarendon wing in LGI. This is a shared ward with Paediatric Nephrology. There are 13 beds, including 2 high dependency beds, and 9 isolation cubicles. There is an adjacent designated transplant theatre and PICU within Clarendon Wing.

There is one general anaesthetic designated endoscopy/liver biopsy list per week in theatre and urgent procedures can be arranged any other day in the acute theatre.

The Leeds based liver clinics take place in the childrens outpatient suite in Martin Wing.
