Job summary

Thegastroenterology service in Leeds is recognised as being a national leader inthe management of inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition, small bowel disorders,neurogastroenterology, and hepatobilliary medicine. The endoscopy service in isone of the largest and best equipped in the country and has well recognisedleaders in interventional endoscopy including EUS/ERCP and EMR/ESD. There areclose links with the transplant hepatology unit, the specialist surgicaldepartments and we are supported by a renowned team of radiologists. You willbe joining a team that has demonstrable experience in delivering high quality,innovative care to our patients across both a local and regional footprint, andwith strong academic links to the University of Leeds. The Team is supported by a triumviratemanagement structure with accountable clinical leadership, supported by seniornursing and management input at both CSU and Speciality level.

The Trust is committed to providing sustainableconsultant-delivered services to ensure the quality of the patient experience.Working patterns that provide senior cover throughout 24 hours per day, sevendays per week will therefore be required. Successful candidates will beexpected to work with the Trust and its consultant staff to deliver servicepatterns and job plans that meet this objective.

Main duties of the job

Theaim of the post is contribute to the growing work load in generalgastroenterology, but with the opportunity to pursue a specialist interest as describedabove. The post holder will take part in the general gastroenterology inpatientcare which is organised on a rotational basis. In the outpatient setting weexpect the post holder to help deliver high quality care by providing generaland specialist gastroenterology clinics each week. In addition the post holderwill be expected to contribute to undergraduate and post-graduate teaching,departmental audit and governance.

To link with Consultant colleagues inother relevant site specialist teams within the CSU and across the Trust.

To work with colleagues in thegastroenterology department to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 14) forgastroenterology and hepatology inpatients, including acute gastrointestinalbleeding. This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute wardrounds during normal working hours.

To contribute to research, teaching andnew developments within the department. The post holder will be encouraged tofacilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programmes on goingin the department.

Thesuccessful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent)and should be includedon the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview,if currently within a training programme within the UK.

Job responsibilities

Thisis a 10 PA locum appointment for a Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist for a 6month period.

Thispost will deliver 10 PAs supporting both the inpatient and outpatient generalgastroenterology service, but with the opportunity to pursue a specialistinterest in IBD, neurogastroenterology, small bowel disorders, hepatobiliarymedicine, interventional endoscopy including EUS/ERCP, or nutrition.

Thepost will be based at St Jamess University Hospital (SJUH). We also provideoutpatient services at Leeds General Infirmary and Wharfedale General Hospital.We are a large yet cohesive department. We provide care for all aspects ofgastrointestinal disease to a large local population and receive tertiaryreferrals into our subspecialty services.

Wehave two inpatient wards in the modern Bexley wing at SJUH. Both wards haveexcellent, well established teams of nursing staff and we are well supported byour experienced gastrointestinal pharmacy, dietetic, and radiology colleagues.

Weprovide high quality endoscopy training, operate up to 8 endoscopy rooms acrossLeeds, the majority of which have recently been refurbished with state-of-the-artequipment. We provide a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures,including bowel cancer screening, ERCP, interventional EUS, advanced EMR/ESD,stenting, wireless capsule endoscopy, double balloon and spiral enteroscopy,and biliary manometry.

Ourtrainees gain valuable experience in managing complex patients within oursubspecialty services. These include a large inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)service (supported by a team of IBD nurse specialists and weekly MDT with ourradiologists and IBD surgeons), enteral and parenteral nutrition (PN)(including home PN), small bowel disease, and pancreaticobiliary medicine.

Thereis a strong research background to the unit with our two academic consultants(Prof. Ford and Dr Subramanian). The research unit is based in the LeedsInstitute of Research at St Jamess on SJUH site. There are existing researchprogrammes in the molecular biology of colorectal cancer and IBD, and currentclinical research projects in IBD, functional gastrointestinal disorders, andendoscopy.

Thereare close links with the Clinical Research Network. Our trainees and fellowsparticipate in recruitment for our portfolio studies, working closely with ourresearch nurses.

MBBS MBChb or equivalent qualification. MRCP or equivalent qualification

Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in gastroenterology in and outpatients Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances. Experience of participation in regular clinical audit. Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.

Desirable

Experience in training endoscopic skills. Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops. Evidence of previous research / publication record. Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
