The National Gallery is looking for a Development Officer - Trusts and Major Gifts. This role will support the Philanthropy team in nurturing and developing high-value, long-lasting relationships with Trusts, Foundations and individual donors and philanthropists. 

You will also support the Development Managers and Senior Development Managers in the Philanthropy team across their whole portfolio of tasks and activities relating to fundraising from Trusts, Foundations and major donors. This will involve drafting, formatting and designing cases for support documents for supporters and prospects, including exhibitions and other proposals and reports.

In addition, you'll be responsible for a focused portfolio of trusts, foundations and individual donors from which to secure four- and five-figure donations in support of the National Gallery for all areas of the organisation’s work.

Due to the nature of the role, you will be required on-site 5 days a week, with some flexibility.

 

Responsibilities

Provide day-to-day support for the Head of Major Gifts and Legacies, the Senior Development Manager, Trusts and Foundations, and the Development Managers, Major Gifts, across their whole portfolio of tasks and activities relating to fundraising from Trusts and individual Major Donors.Source information (including budgets) and draft, format and design proposals and reports for Trust and Foundation and individual Major Donor supporters and prospects.Build cases for support documents, including exhibition proposals and reports.Draft and prepare correspondence for donors and prospects, and briefing notes for events and meetings, liaising with staff across the Gallery at all levels, as well as senior volunteers.Build own portfolio of smaller Trusts and Foundations, with asks of £5k - £25k in support of the National Gallery.Maintain an effective filing and retrieval system.Record and update information on our Tessitura database, in accordance with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 2018, and ensure that all data relating to donors and prospects is accurate and up-to-date.Assist at team cultivation and stewardship events.Assist in arranging donor-facing visits and events as required.Draft and circulate agendas and minutes as needed for meetings.Undertake other administrative tasks, such as donor crediting, as requested, to assist in meeting the objectives of the Philanthropy team.

 

Knowledge, skills and experience

Some experience in a fundraising, client-facing or sales office environment.Proven ability to write high-quality proposals, reports and correspondence, bringing together sometimes complex information in a coherent way that is motivating for donors.Demonstrable verbal and interpersonal skills – able to communicate with people of all levels both within the Gallery and externally (e.g. Trustees, senior volunteers, donors, prospects).Evidence-based examples of strong attention to detail.Demonstrable ability to multi-task effectively.Proven ability to prioritise and work to deadlines.Comfortable with Microsoft Office and able to pick up new systems effectively.Demonstrable evidence of writing persuasive copy in a professional setting.Demonstrable ability to take ownership of a range of tasks and deadlines as required by the job specification and operational needs.Professional with the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully.Comfortable with managing multiple deadlines, multi-tasking, and capable of managing expectations and priorities while working in a busy environment.Diplomatic in communications with internal and external contacts at all levels, and in relation to confidential information.Proactive and adaptable to changing needs within a team.Interest in the arts, culture and heritage and able to demonstrate an interest in working at the National Gallery.
