Our Archive

IMechE holds a significant archive that charts the evolution of mechanical engineering from the early nineteenth century. Our collections highlight key developments in railway, manufacturing and powerplant technology, and include the papers of renowned engineers. It includes the Institutions historical records, company records from pioneering engineering firms and original artworks, and models. The archive is vital for preserving our corporate memory and supports our strategy to maximise the impact of engineering by showcasing our heritage to engineers and researchers worldwide.

We are now looking for an Archivist to join our Library and Archive team on a full-time and permanent basis.

The Role

As an Archivist, you will determine the strategic goals for the archive, lead projects, promote the collections to engage new audiences, and prepare for a potential relocation of the collection.

You will act as the Institutions expert on archive management and relevant legislation and be responsible for all matters concerning the Institutions historical collection. Your responsibilities will include managing storage, preservation, developing policies, cataloguing, answering enquiries and facilitating the use of the collections.

About You

To be considered as an Archivist, you will need:

- Either a postgraduate archival qualification, or equivalent practical experience working in an archive environment
- Proven experience of working with archive collections management software such as Epexio
- Experience of digitisation processes
- An understanding and experience of the appraisal and arrangement of large archive collections and cataloguing to ISAD(G)
- Good working knowledge of relevant archival legislation and standards
- Strong organisational skills
- Good communication skills with the ability to write engaging promotional materials
- Self-reliant, innovative, ability to use own judgement
- Flexible, able to take on a range of tasks as a member of a small team
