Key responsibilities

As the Head of Style & Design, you'll be at the helm of B&Q's design and style vision across all categories. You will be responsible for crafting and implementing a Style & Design' strategy that not only enhances performance across all channels but also inspires our customers. By creating customer-focused, inspirational direction for our categories, you'll optimize sales and margins, boost consumer interest, and ultimately drive market share gains.

Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Develop a 3-year UK design strategy for B&Q categories using trend, market, and customer insights to guide product decisions and support annual range changes.
  2. Lead design interface for key support functions (KF CGI, marketing, digital, VM), ensuring consistent trend-led execution across all channels for a cohesive customer experience.
  3. Primary interface for UK design & style with the Offer & Sourcing team, ensuring CMF recommendations meet UK customer needs and are consistent across categories.
  4. Influence category thinking on trend and design insights, educating Buying teams on identifying market opportunities for competitive advantage.
  5. Identify strategic product & communication opportunities within the UK DIY industry to enhance consumer relevance and consideration.
  6. Guide Category teams on the latest material and construction technologies to support customer access to relevant DIY/Trade products.
  7. Support vendor management with innovation insights, considering metrics like access to innovation' and speed to market' for vendor ratings.
  8. Ensure quality and sustainability standards are met in design and material selection to reinforce the brand.
  9. Conduct regular visits to stores (digital & physical), competitors, vendors, raw material specialists, and trade shows.

Example of Key Deliverables:

  1. Annual macro trend presentation that demonstrates how lifestyle trends shape the future of the business and customer behaviour - a key input into the Customer Data Team's annual How we live now' survey. Landing the so what' with commercial teams. Turning insight into knowledge and knowledge into action.
  2. Use business tools such as Trend Bible, WGSN and other research tools to drive UK market specific product trend forecasting and design direction. Define and develop stories' for specific categories to use at a subcategory level leading to trend led range recommendations for the Buying teams.
  3. Responsible for making it easy for customers to seamlessly combine products across all areas of B&Q through the creation and application of consistent style direction and CMF across categories. Responsible for ensuring consistency and good range coordination between product families and subcategories through the development of a UK style direction that is complementary to Kingfisher O&S led Signals' but more relevant for UK customers.
  4. Design direction for the VM team - from initial brief through to lab build concept approval (includes plinth updates, vignettes, lay flats and other inspirational briefs).
  5. Creative direction for communication tools to support relevance and sales growth e.g. design brief for photography, brochures, POS, PR, social / influencer campaigns, and support for the delivery of an annual consumer facing trends guide.
  6. Articulate the style direction more widely across the business and support Retail colleagues with knowledge and confidence, providing training and mentoring where needed.

Required skills & experience

To deliver this role you will have experience in:

  1. Proven leader and expert influencer: Strong experience in creative and design insight roles, with expertise in design management.
  2. Knowledgeable in sourcing, buying, and product design: Understands how these functions operate and how trend and design expertise can drive sales.
  3. Experienced in trend-led strategies: Successfully developed and implemented strategies that boost sales and market share.
  4. Deep understanding of the UK home improvement market.
  5. Performance-driven: Uses insights to support commercial teams in building an agile NPI and innovation pipeline.
  6. Customer and market insight translator: Capable of understanding and communicating technical details specific to categories.
  7. Influential communicator: Able to influence a wide range of stakeholders and challenge appropriately.
  8. Cross-functional team leader: Experienced in leading, developing, and coaching teams to achieve high performance.
  9. Results-oriented: Organized, structured, and committed to building an effective control environment while managing risks.
