The Role:

The Essex Virtual School has responsibilities for the education of Children in Care, Previously Looked After and young people with an assigned Social Worker. Their Advisory Team works to give advice and support to promote their educational progress and attainment.

As a Virtual School Apprentice, your role will involve helping to support young people in expressing their views about their education plans. You'll engage with them both individually and in group settings, under supervision, to work toward positive outcomes.

Working four days as part of an advisory team and one day for learning and development, you will ensure young people have positive experiences, by working with them to identify what's important to them educationally, either individually through participation or mentoring work or on a group basis in partnership with schools and social care. You will work with targeted Youth Advisers and the Essex Virtual School advisory team across Essex.

You will need to be someone who can focus on putting young people at the heart of your work. Working flexible hours, including some evenings, weekends and residentials, you will be supported by an experienced team of Teachers and Youth Workers in a variety of settings.

About You:

You will:

  • A good level of numeracy, literacy (GCSE or equivalent or demonstrable experience, if you do not have this, you will need a willingness to work towards this) and ICT. *
  • Have experience of supporting children and young people, at school or on a voluntary basis.
  • Be a care experienced individual (recent experience is preferred) and be passionate about promoting the education of care experienced individuals.
  • Have a keen interest in working with children and young people.
  • Have the ability to work well as part of a team as well as being able to work using your own initiative.
  • Have good communication and interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to liaise effectively and build good working relationships with staff and young people.
  • Be able to work alongside a diverse range of individuals from different backgrounds.
  • Have the ability to work flexibly - You will need good time management and have the ability to work evenings and weekends as well as residential work, to be able to respond effectively to a young persons' needs.
  • Be able to travel across a wide geographical area in a timely and flexible manner at various times of the day.
  • Have a good understanding of the issues affecting children in care and their education and be able to share their views with stakeholders to provide opportunities for learning and developing the services provided by the partner organisations.
  • Be a motivated individual who enjoys interacting with children and young people.

* An adjustment can be made for individuals who hold a current or historic Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) or Special Educational Need (SEN) or a learning difficulty or a disability. However, individuals will be required to achieve a Level 2 in Maths and English by the end of the apprenticeship if applicable.

Essential Requirements for the role:

  • Recent lived experience of the care system.
  • This role will require you to have the ability for flexible working hours which may include some evenings, weekend and residential stays.
  • This job role requires you to be mobile throughout an operational area. Therefore, the post holder will need to have a driving licence and access to a vehicle, or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means.

What will you be doing?

  • Support the Virtual School (VS), schools, professionals, carers and other stakeholders to be more responsive to the lived experience of VS cohorts supporting educational outcomes.
  • Work with Essex Virtual School to identify priorities, support educational needs, interventions and goals, developing and implementing strategies for securing these.
  • Take up referrals and work with Essex children in care using an agreed mentoring process, with support, in order to identify, understand and meet their needs, with an emphasis on promoting positive outcomes and developing aspirations.
  • Act as a good role model to Children in Care and other young people, supporting them to have a positive influence on service delivery.
  • Provide support to children and young people on an individual or group basis, under the guidance of the Advisory Team
  • Promote Virtual School cohorts' self- awareness, confidence and encouraging their involvement in the design of the Virtual School service and supporting them in evaluating the impact of the service upon their own situation.
  • Provide targeted outreach and awareness raising activities to other agencies to support the increased identification of Essex Virtual School cohorts' views including presentations, workshops and events, with support as needed.
  • Prepare presentations and flyers and to undertake administrative tasks such as photocopying, maintaining and updating records and databases.
  • Assist the Advisory Team with projects and other initiatives.
  • Fulfil the criteria of the apprenticeship qualification.
  • Support the development and facilitation of Essex young people's voices to inform their Personal Educational Plans (particularly those that are not in education, employment and training) to ensure that they are responsive to their needs.
  • Ensure that the Essex County Council policies, procedures and practice for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people are implemented.
