Chelmsford, Essex, United Kingdom Essex County Council Full time

Position Overview:

The Essex Virtual School is dedicated to enhancing the educational experiences of Children in Care, those Previously Looked After, and young individuals with an assigned Social Worker. The Advisory Team is committed to providing guidance and support to foster educational achievement and progress.

As a Youth Support Worker Apprentice, your responsibilities will include assisting young individuals in articulating their perspectives regarding their educational plans. You will engage with them in both one-on-one and group settings, under supervision, to strive for positive educational outcomes.

In this role, you will spend four days collaborating with the advisory team and one day focused on personal learning and development. Your goal will be to ensure that young people have enriching experiences by collaborating with them to identify their educational priorities, whether through individual mentoring or group initiatives in partnership with educational institutions and social services. You will work alongside targeted Youth Advisers and the Essex Virtual School advisory team throughout Essex.

We seek a candidate who prioritizes the needs of young individuals in their work. This position requires flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and residential activities, with support from a seasoned team of Teachers and Youth Workers across various environments.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A solid foundation in numeracy and literacy (GCSE or equivalent, or relevant experience; a willingness to work towards this is essential if not already achieved).
  • Experience in supporting children and young people, whether in educational settings or through volunteer work.
  • A personal connection to the care system (recent experience is preferred) and a passion for advocating for the education of care-experienced individuals.
  • A genuine interest in working with children and young people.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively within a team while also demonstrating initiative.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective liaison and relationship-building with staff and young individuals.
  • The capability to engage with a diverse range of individuals from various backgrounds.
  • Flexibility in working hours, with good time management skills to accommodate evenings, weekends, and residential commitments to meet the needs of young individuals.
  • The ability to travel across a broad geographical area promptly and flexibly at different times of the day.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by children in care and their educational needs, with the ability to convey their perspectives to stakeholders to enhance learning opportunities and service development.
  • A motivated attitude with a genuine enjoyment of interacting with children and young people.

* Adjustments can be made for individuals with a current or historical Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP), Special Educational Needs (SEN), or other learning difficulties or disabilities. However, individuals must achieve a Level 2 in Maths and English by the end of the apprenticeship if applicable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Virtual School, educational institutions, professionals, caregivers, and other stakeholders in becoming more attuned to the lived experiences of Virtual School cohorts to enhance educational outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Essex Virtual School to identify priorities, support educational needs, interventions, and objectives, and develop strategies to achieve these.
  • Manage referrals and work with Essex children in care through an established mentoring process, with guidance, to identify, understand, and address their needs, focusing on promoting positive outcomes and aspirations.
  • Serve as a positive role model for Children in Care and other young individuals, influencing service delivery positively.
  • Provide individualized or group support to children and young people under the supervision of the Advisory Team.
  • Encourage self-awareness and confidence among Virtual School cohorts, promoting their involvement in shaping the Virtual School service and evaluating its impact on their situations.
  • Conduct outreach and awareness-raising activities for other agencies to enhance the identification of Essex Virtual School cohorts' perspectives, including presentations, workshops, and events, with necessary support.
  • Prepare presentations and informational materials, and perform administrative tasks such as maintaining and updating records and databases.
  • Assist the Advisory Team with various projects and initiatives.
  • Fulfill the requirements of the apprenticeship qualification.
  • Support the development and facilitation of young people's voices in informing their Personal Educational Plans, particularly for those not engaged in education, employment, or training, ensuring responsiveness to their needs.
  • Ensure compliance with Essex County Council's policies and procedures for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
