Chelmsford, Essex, United Kingdom Essex County Council Full time

Position Overview:

The Essex Virtual School is dedicated to the educational advancement of Children in Care, those Previously Looked After, and young individuals with an assigned Social Worker. The Advisory Team plays a crucial role in providing guidance and support to enhance their educational journey and achievements.

As a Virtual School Apprentice, your responsibilities will include assisting young individuals in articulating their perspectives regarding their educational plans. You will engage with them in both one-on-one and group environments, under supervision, to strive for favorable outcomes.

Working four days a week as part of an advisory team and dedicating one day to personal development, you will ensure that young people have enriching experiences. This will involve collaborating with them to pinpoint their educational priorities, whether through individual participation, mentoring, or group initiatives in partnership with educational institutions and social services. You will collaborate with targeted Youth Advisers and the Essex Virtual School advisory team throughout Essex.

We seek an individual who prioritizes placing young people at the center of their work. Flexibility in working hours is essential, including some evenings, weekends, and residential activities, with support from a skilled team of Educators and Youth Workers across various settings.

Candidate Profile:

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • A solid foundation in numeracy and literacy (GCSE or equivalent, or relevant experience; a willingness to work towards this is necessary if not already achieved).
  • Experience in supporting children and young people, whether in educational settings or through volunteer work.
  • A background as a care-experienced individual (recent experience is preferred) and a passion for advocating for the education of care-experienced youth.
  • A genuine interest in working with children and young people.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively within a team while also demonstrating initiative.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to foster effective relationships with staff and young individuals.
  • The capability to engage with a diverse range of individuals from various backgrounds.
  • Flexibility in working hours, including evenings and weekends, and the ability to respond to the needs of young individuals.
  • The ability to travel across a broad geographical area in a timely and adaptable manner.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by children in care and their educational needs, along with the ability to convey their perspectives to stakeholders to enhance learning opportunities and service development.
  • A motivated disposition with a passion for engaging with children and young people.

* Adjustments can be made for individuals with a current or historical Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP), Special Educational Needs (SEN), or learning difficulties. However, achieving a Level 2 in Maths and English by the end of the apprenticeship is required if applicable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Virtual School, educational institutions, professionals, caregivers, and other stakeholders in becoming more attuned to the lived experiences of the cohorts served by the Virtual School, thereby enhancing educational outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Essex Virtual School to identify priorities, support educational requirements, interventions, and objectives, while developing and implementing strategies to achieve these.
  • Respond to referrals and work with Essex children in care through an established mentoring process, with guidance, to identify, comprehend, and address their needs, focusing on fostering positive outcomes and aspirations.
  • Serve as a positive role model for Children in Care and other young individuals, encouraging them to influence service delivery positively.
  • Provide support to children and young people on both an individual and group basis, under the direction of the Advisory Team.
  • Encourage self-awareness and confidence among Virtual School cohorts, promoting their involvement in shaping the Virtual School services and aiding them in evaluating the impact of these services on their situations.
  • Conduct targeted outreach and awareness-raising initiatives for other agencies to enhance the identification of the views of Essex Virtual School cohorts, including presentations, workshops, and events, with necessary support.
  • Prepare presentations and informational materials, as well as perform administrative tasks such as photocopying and maintaining records and databases.
  • Assist the Advisory Team with various projects and initiatives.
  • Fulfill the requirements of the apprenticeship qualification.
  • Support the development and facilitation of young people's voices in informing their Personal Educational Plans, particularly for those not engaged in education, employment, or training, ensuring responsiveness to their needs.
  • Ensure compliance with Essex County Council's policies, procedures, and practices regarding the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people.
