Our output ranges from ambitious landmarks for BBC One and iPlayer (Green Planet, Mammals, and Planet Earth III) to children’s programming (Deadly Dinosaurs and Andy’s Adventures), as well as ground-breaking adventure, formatted, presenter led, feature docs and event programming such as Endangered for Discovery Channel, Prehistoric Planet for Apple TV+ and live programming such as the BAFTA winning Springwatch for the BBC.

We are looking for an experienced and creative Series Director/Producer to lead an exciting new 2 x 60’ series for a 3rd party broadcaster. The right candidate will be highly creative non-fiction storyteller with visual flair and a proven ability to build dramatic, emotionally engaging, multilayered character stories over time. They will have a clear and committed understanding of the constraints of budget and be an inspiring, considerate, and responsible team leader. This role is subject to greenlight funding.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of all production processes on a day-to-day basis and to lead the team to deliver a gripping editorial premium two-part series, that meets the stated editorial aims across all platforms.
  • Building and delivering an editorial approach and structure that integrates archive, eyewitness testimony and wildlife footage into one compelling narrative over two parts.
  • Developing and delivering a bold and innovative visual style that delivers the editorial in an engaging and creative way.
  • Oversight of the archive storylines and relevant research and academic findings to ensure the most effective editorial structure and compelling, factually accurate, narrative.
  • To plan for and carry out in-depth interviews with key contributors that will enable the dramatic retelling of events through their personal testimony.
  • Working closely with all team members and at every stage of production to ensure production processes that enable the team to effectively deliver the series editorial and visual style.
  • Working with the edit/offline team to develop and incorporate graphics and transitions into the overall visual style.
  • To plan strategically to ensure editorial aspirations align with budgets and available resources.
  • Oversee the health and safety of your team’s shoots in what is a challenging and highly specialised area of filming.

Are you the Right Candidate?

  • Experience of working in observational documentary – delivering a long form continuing narrative that spans over multiple parts.
  • An exceptional storyteller with outstanding editorial judgement and a track record delivering multi-layered, emotionally engaging series.
  • Experience of interview and archive driven premium factual series.
  • Visually ambitious with experience creating and delivering a series look. Experience integrating graphics and VFXs an advantage.
  • Experience of directing and producing character led natural history long from narrative stories, ideally across episodes and series is preferred.
  • Proven ability to set vision, lead and motivate the team, ensuring that the creative for the series is communicated and understood and that the editorial specification is realized across all aspects of production.
  • Lead and inspire ideas generation for story beats and developing character storylines and provide a strong sense of editorial direction and a supportive environment.
  • Responsibility for the construction and oversight of a full production schedule and budget in conjunction with Production Management, and others as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate the ability to consider a range of problems and use own judgement to apply effective, time critical solutions.
  • Strong experience of influencing, negotiating, and communicating effectively and sensitively both internally and with external agencies/partners.
  • Able to demonstrate strong editorial judgement in a fast-moving environment, and a thorough knowledge of editorial and legal guidelines for relevant broadcasters/platforms.
  • Can demonstrate the ability to consider a range of problems and use own judgement to apply effective, time critical solutions.
  • Develop and manage positive working relationships with staff, contributors and talent and be able to give constructive feedback.
  • Ensure all content is delivered within the legal and appropriate editorial policy frameworks, and on time.
  • Responsible for ensuring that every aspect of the series adheres to Health & Safety regulations.
