F1000 (part of Taylor & Francis Group) has an exciting new opportunity for an Associate Publisher to join the team. F1000 is a trailblazer in rethinking research communications by combining the opportunities offered by technology, with a passion to reimagine how research can be validated and shared.Together, we champion openness and transparency torapidly deliver knowledge to the benefit of all, byproviding services and ultimately a range of choices to researchers, institutions, funders, and scholarly societies, that facilitate collaborative and efficient ways of doing research and delivering impact. Working closely with colleagues across F1000 and Taylor & Francis, including in the Marketing, Commercial and Researcher Services divisions, the Associate Publisher role will be responsible for supporting the development, and delivery, of the publishing strategy to grow article revenue for F1000’s publishing platforms and gateways.

You should be commercially minded and able to think strategically, and can successfully implement new strategies and business plans whilst being flexible and adapt quickly to change. You will bring previous experience in a publishing environment with demonstrable success, and knowledge and understanding of scholarly publishing and policy, and of Open Research practices.

You should be self-driven and a highly effective team player, can think on your feet, have a strong solution-driven approach, and be an excellent project manager with demonstrable experience of developing and successfully managing relationships with partners.


What you’ll be doing:

The key purpose of the Associate Publisher role is to support the overarching publishing strategy to grow article revenue on our flagship partner platforms and F1000Research. Reporting to the Head of Publishing and working closely with F1000’s Publishing, Editorial, and Marketing teams, the Associate Publisher will:

  • Work across the business to implement an annual strategy across F1000Research and partner platforms to maximise content growth and our influence in the wider academic community.
  • Deliver outreach campaigns to researchers to convince them to publish with F1000 venues.
  • Provide high quality management and build strong relationships with external partners to successfully develop and manage their F1000 publishing venues to develop opportunities to deliver enhanced and/or new services, grow their commitment to Open Research publishing, and ultimately ensuring successful renewal of contracts.
  • Conduct meetings and provide reporting to external partners.
  • Build relationships and broaden networks with academic communities, including representing F1000 publications, products, and services at external events.
  • Support the Head of Publishing, Publisher, and Senior Associate Publisher to identify opportunities across Taylor & Francis for collaboration on new products, services, and initiatives that F1000 might add value to and/or benefit from.
  • Contribute to content growthstrategies in Open Research across Taylor &Francis and F1000.
  • Work with the F1000 Publishing and Editorial teams to improve publishing processes and workflows.
  • Maintain an active and up-to-date knowledge of the latest developments in publishing, especially in Open Research.
  • Take an active role in relevant innovation projects and initiatives as necessary.

What we’re looking for:

  • Previous scholarly publishing experience
  • Customer focus and demonstrable experience with managing important external partnerships
  • Ability to influence partners and develop existing relationships
  • Experience and demonstrable success in growing article revenue for an academic publisher, particularly by creating and successfully implementing author outreach and content acquisition plans
  • Experience of working with authors and building networks with the wider research community
  • Good commercial and business sense, and a data-driven and evidence-based approach
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to manage your own workload and prioritise multiple projects
  • Knowledge of the academic publishing industry and the wider scholarly research system, particularly Open Access and Open Research
  • An active interest in and knowledge of Open Access publishing and the move to more Open Research practices more generally
  • A positive and proactive solution-driven approach to problem solving both in daily tasks and more complex troubleshooting, with the ability to think laterally
  • Willingness to learn and develop skills with key business systems and processes
  • The ability to work independently and proactively, with awareness of when to make use of the wider infrastructure around them
  • Excellent project management and teamwork skills and able to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills
  • Well-developed networking and persuasion skills
  • Capable of representing F1000 as an expert speaker on Open Research
  • Willing to travel occasionally and represent F1000 at external events
