This company have built a strong reputation in the market for providing a first class service to their clients. Currently employing over 60 people from their dedicated offices, they expect to grow significantly over the next 12-18 months.


They have decided to tweak their strategy and as part of this change, now seek a technically minded Senior Property and/or Casualty Underwriter, with strategic business experience and excellent relationship skills to head up their underwriting team. The successful individual will be

part of a Senior Management team, who along with the Managing Director, will drive the business forward.


Job Summary:


The Head of Technical Underwriting will play a crucial role in setting the underwriting strategy for the company, leading and developing our underwriting team, ensuring the highest standards of technical

underwriting and risk assessment. 

They will drive and develop strong relationships with our insurers to maximise and enhance our product and scheme offerings. 

This position requires a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of underwriting principles, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to drive profitable growth.


Key Responsibilities:

 

Leadership and Team Management:

•Lead, mentor, and develop a team of technical underwriters, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.

•Set clear performance objectives and provide regular feedback and coaching to team members.

 

Technical Underwriting:

•Oversee the development and implementation of underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures across the company.

•Identifying and delivering product development.

•Ensure underwriting decisions are made in compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards.

•Review and approve large or complex risks, providing technical guidance and support to the underwriting team.

 

Strategic Planning and Execution:

•Develop and execute underwriting strategies to achieve profitable growth and market competitiveness.

•Identify and convert business opportunities to deliver GWP and income targets.

•Collate, analyse and monitor underwriting performance MI and produce business plans for the board and insurer partners.

•Monitor industry trends, market conditions, and emerging risks to inform underwriting practices and product development.

•Collaborate with senior management to align underwriting strategies with overall business objectives.

 

Risk Management:

•Implement robust risk assessment and mitigation processes.

•Ensure accurate and thorough documentation of underwriting decisions and risk evaluations.

•Conduct regular audits and reviews to ensure adherence to underwriting standards and identify areas for improvement.

 

Stakeholder Engagement:

•Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, reinsurers, and other key stakeholders.

•Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and meetings to enhance our market presence and reputation.


Qualifications and experience required:

•Insurance, Finance or Business qualifications ( e.g. MBA or ACII ) preferred.

•Minimum of 10 years of underwriting experience, with at least 5 years in a senior or leadership role.

•Preferably an Insurer or MGA background.

•Ideal candidate would have experience of Delegated Authority and/or Treaty binders.

•Proven track record of developing and implementing successful underwriting strategies.

•In-depth knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and regulatory requirements.

•Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate at all levels.

•High level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail.
