Overview

The School of Psychology and Sport Science houses two of Bangor University’s high performing departments: the Department of Psychology, and the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Our world-leading research spans cognitive neuroscience, clinical interventions, psychological wellbeing, elite performance, physical activity, and health and applied human physiology. In the recent Research Excellence Framework Exercise, 86% of Psychology outputs were rated as either 3* or 4*. The Department of Psychology was also ranked 17th in the UK for the societal impact of its research. Our research-inspired teaching is led by a well-established teaching team, comprising of PhD qualified academics with a focus on teaching, learning, student care and the student experience. The team, which includes two National Teaching Fellows and staff accredited by Advance HE from Fellow to Principal Fellow, lead on pedagogic innovations within the School. The curricula include a wide portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and offers a clear and progressive ‘pathway’ model of education to enable students to travel from undergraduate studies through to the postgraduate opportunities which will make them competitive in a wide range of professional contexts (from Masters, PhD, to DClinPsy, to a multitude of graduate careers). Purpose of the Job

The main purpose of the job is to assist the Clinical Director in organising the clinical experience aspects of training for trainees and developing the supervisor training for qualified clinical psychologists.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Take lead responsibility for organising clinical placements for trainees across all three years of the programme. Liaise with BCUHB and PTHB Service Heads to ensure adequate placement provision for NWCPP in a context of service pressures and competing training demands. Organise, develop, and implement the supervisor training for qualified clinical psychologists. Carry out research in an area of clinical psychology relevant to local and national priorities. Provide teaching for the NWCPP, to assist in curriculum development, and to co-ordinate academic input from other psychologists within their respective specialist areas. Act as Training Co-ordinator for the NWCPP. Provide clinical experience/placements for trainees on the NWCPP during their time in their Health Board. Act as an Internal Assessor for NWCPP academic assignments and thesis. Be a member of the NWCPP Board of Examiners. Be a member of the NWCPP Programme Team and to contribute as appropriate to administration as prescribed by the Programme Director.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

To carry out such additional duties as may, from time to time, be allocated by the Programme Director. Participate in the student recruitment and induction procedures of the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme. To implement developments in clinical training practice in accordance with overall training programme objectives. This will involve liaising with local postgraduate qualified clinicians and national trainers, and offering training in the new developments as appropriate, where this may involve communication of highly complex theoretical and practical knowledge. To provide expert advice, personal and professional support to any trainee that is demonstrating need beyond that normally given within the existing support systems to facilitate reflection on learning, practice, and development. This may include dealing with highly sensitive, emotive, or complex situations involving trainees in distress. To exercise delegated responsibility for day-to-day management of designated trainees including appraisal/ PDR and informal grievance. This may include managing situations which are highly sensitive and complex, and where there may be differences of opinion, which must be managed in a professional but sensitive manner.

Teaching Duties will include:

Plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds and learning styles. Motivate students to proactive engagement in learning and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work. Keep abreast of new professional, educational and related social, economic, and ethnological developments.


Research Duties will include:

Personal research and/or collaborative research with colleagues. Manage one’s own research projects, with an emphasis on research output of a quality and quantity to contribute positively to the esteem and resources generated by Research Assessments. Disseminate and publish in peer-reviewed journals of international standard or other appropriate output. Contribute to research groups / networks internally and externally to the School. Contribute towards the School’s capability to attract external research funding. Engage in scholarly and other relevant professional activities. Supervision of DClinPsy research projects.  The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities. Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

DClinPsy (or equivalent) in Clinical Psychology. Registered with the Health Care Professions Council as a practitioner psychologist. Eligible for Chartered Clinical Psychologist status with the BPS. Experience of clinical supervision and clinical training. Good teaching experience in a clinically relevant area. Recognised by the HEA as a Senior Fellow / Recognised by Advance HE as a Senior Fellow against Descriptor 3 of the UKPSF (or substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Senior Fellowship within 3 years of appointment).

Good track record of research in a clinically relevant area, of national quality. Experience of research supervision and training

Experience of teaching at higher education level with evidence of successful student learning outcomes. Evidence of good / innovative pedagogic practice. Experience of supervising postgraduate projects Evidence of leading projects successfully and addressing challenges that arise, including dealing with challenging interpersonal aspects of implementation.

Experience of contribution to the wider student experience e.g recruitment/retention initiatives, employability/enterprise initiatives, student welfare. Experience as a clinical tutor on a clinical doctorate programme. Evidence of scholarship relating to learning and teaching through publication of books, articles and/or papers in academic journals. Evidence of Conference and/or seminar presentations on pedagogy.
