Preston, United Kingdom Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Full time

Job overview

The Head & Neck team are looking for a dynamic colleague to join our team on a fixed term secondment to cover maternity leave. Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is the centre for Oncology and the majority of specialised major head and neck surgical services. The CNS role supports patients from pre-diagnosis through to rehabilitation following treatment. This includes the specialised management of altered airways.

We have a significant number of nurse led and multidisciplinary outpatient clinics and work extremely closely with the Dietitian / Speech Therapist / Consultant Therapeutic Radiographer to deliver the required services for this unique group of patients. The role will also work extremely closely with a Patient Navigator, a further Macmillan CNS in H&N, Cancer Support Worker, 9 head and neck surgeons and 2 Oncologists.

You are supported by a Lead CNS and Nurse Consultant in Head & Neck. We have specialist in-patient wards for both major head and neck surgery and oncology and providing support to in-patients and ward staff is a part of this role. Non-Medical Prescribing is also a key aspect of this role and applicants must be willing to undertake the course if you are not currently an NMP. The head and neck team is consistently rated very highly in the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey - highest rated team in the Trust on several occasions including the most recent survey in 2023.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced RN in head and neck to work along the existing CNS team that provides specialist nursing intervention throughout the patient journey for both head and neck and thyroid cancer.

This includes providing specialist nurse led outpatient clinics for thyroid cancer follow-up, Rapid Access Neck Lump Clinics, and working closely with AHP colleagues to provide Pre / Peri / Post treatment clinics, in addition to working in consultant MDT clinics. You will be responsible for assessing and undertaking specialist care throughout the patient journey.

You will be a Non-Medical Prescriber or willing to undertake the course: expert symptom management is especially crucial to this patient group.

The role includes managing patients with altered airways and facilitating safe discharge into the community which may include domiciliary visits.

Clinical audit and research is important to the head and neck service and you will be key in assisting with the agenda; this includes the PETNeck2 study.

Working for our organisation

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides specialist head and neck cancer services to approximately 1.6million patients across the Lancashire & South Cumbria footprint. The Trust is unusual in that specialist major surgery and oncology treatments are provided on the same site. This allows the CNS team to support the patient throughout the whole pathway.

Working with us gives you the knowledge and sense of pride that every activity you do genuinely does make a difference to support our patients & staff, ensuring we keep thriving & delivering outstanding healthcare right across our local towns.

You’ll have access to varied development opportunities, learn new skills, meet amazing people & work closely with medical colleagues who are extremely supportive of the CNS team.

You’ll make an impact, be challenged to think differently, be bold & help innovate to keep improving things. Everything we do centres around patient care and enhancing their experience which means your role is pivotal and something really to be proud of.
