The specialty doctor post was created to support the development of the Adult Community Eating Disorders service. This is a new and dynamic team which has been formed as a standalone community service for Eating Disorders in Oxford. The team is focussed on the safe and containing management of the psychological and medical aspects of eating disorders. There is an excellent level of psychological expertise in the service and the post-holder will be expected to learn about and develop skills in different psychological models used in formulating and treating Eating Disorder. This will be with the appropriate guidance and supervision of the wider team.

Main duties of the job

Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust provides a comprehensive range of mental health services and community health services to the Oxfordshire, mental health services and some community services to Buckinghamshire, and a number of specialised services (e.g., Forensic, Eating Disorders and CAHMS) to adjacent counties and beyond. Section 75 agreements are in place with County Councils, so that social workers are managed within the Trust's multidisciplinary mental health teams. The Trust also provides CAMHS and Eating Disorder services to Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath, and Northeast Somerset (BaNES, collectively 'BSW').

The Trust's services are organised and managed on the basis of four clinical directorates: two all-age Mental Health Directorates (Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire/BSW), a Community Services Directorate, and a Specialised Services Directorate (including forensic mental health, dentistry, learning disability and pharmacy). All clinical services are developed in line with national policy guidance. The service models adopted by the Trust support a strong focus on flexible community provision by comprehensive multi-disciplinary services backed up by effective day services and inpatient facilities.

Job description
Job responsibilities

Under the supervision and direction of the consultant, the post holder will be responsible for:

1. Day-to-day management of patients in Community Eating Disorders service including CPA review, discharge planning meetings, and Mental Health Act managers or tribunal hearings. This will be under the clinical supervision of the Consultants Psychiatrist from the team.

2. Liaison with the local Inpatient Eating Disorders teams (Cotswold House Oxford, Marlborough and the Priory Marlow) to ensure co-ordinated clinical care of patients.

3. Conduct the assessment and management of new patient referrals into the service and develop and hone skills in specialised assessment and management of patients with Eating Disorders. This includes learning about and managing associated psychiatric and physical comorbidities such as OCD, depression, personality disorder and diabetes, functional bowel disease.

4. Providing timely written correspondence to relevant professionals documenting assessments, ongoing management, progress, and discharge summaries using Trust IT and clinical records system training will be provided where needed.

5. Work collaboratively with other agencies, liaison with staff from other teams to manage smooth and timely transfer into and out of the service. The teams most commonly involved with this will be the Adult Community Mental Health Teams, inpatient adult Eating Disorders services and CAMHS Eating Disorders teams.

6. Active commitment to delivering the Trusts clinical governance agenda. Services will lead their own governance agenda including audit, quality, patient experience, learning from incidents, patient safety initiatives and interrogation of data. The senior leadership team comprising of Service manager, consultant and team manager will link with division both identifying areas of concern and feeding back actions.

7. Contribution to developing and delivering improved clinical services.

8. The post holders will be expected to contribute to the collection of data as required by the Trust and other relevant agencies. This includes the timely recording of clinical activity data, and participation in clinical audit -with appropriate administrative support.

9. The post holder will normally cross-cover with trainee doctor for OACEDS for annual leave, study leave and brief periods of sickness absence.

10. Post holders will administer ECT on a rota with the other specialty doctors and trainees under exceptional circumstances. ECT is supervised by a consultant and training will be given if ad hoc input is required.
