University Hospital Sussex is proud to announce the launch of two ground breaking workforce development programmes aimed at upskilling nurses for specialised roles in cancer care. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a pioneering initiative that supports both novice and experienced nurses in advancing their careers within the field of oncology.

Position Overview:

We are offering a 2 years fixed-term band 7 post designed to support these exciting programmes, which aim to elevate nurses aspiring to become cancer nurses and further develop those with existing cancer care experience into Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS).

Programme Details:

1. Novice Cancer Nursing Programme:

Develop SACT skills and complete the UK Oncology Nurse Society (UKONS) SACT passport and the Fundamentals of Cancer Care Course.

Gain diverse experience across specialist services within the Cancer Division, including Haematology & Oncology wards, SACT units, and site-specific CNS teams.

Engage in placements across the MDT cancer pathway to gain a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of cancer management and care.

2. CNS Programme:

Work alongside site specialist MDT Cancer teams, acute oncology, and palliative care and CNS teams.

Develop specialized skills necessary for a CNS role, supported by a structured MSc pathway.

We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses.

Promote Rotational Programmes: Actively support and promote the rotational programmes both internally and externally to drive recruitment efforts. Collaborate with Educators: Work alongside Band 7 educators and other mentors to develop action plans for novice nurses, focusing on teaching complex chemotherapy regimens and skills. Guide experienced nurses in developing CNS skills. Participate in Steering Groups: Attend steering group meetings to support the development of novice cancer nurse and aspiring CNS rotational programmes. Assist in setting goals, deliverables, and benefits realization to define project and resource requirements. Analyse and Adjust Plans: Continuously review, analyse, and interpret ongoing project deliverables to assess their impact on achieving wider programme objectives. Make dynamic adjustments to project plans to ensure key milestones are met. Streamline Teaching Opportunities: Collaborate with current educators to streamline teaching opportunities across sites and support in-house courses developed by the cancer division. Review National Guidance: Stay informed about new or emerging national guidance and assess its impact on programme delivery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Provide dedicated support to the rotational cohort throughout their placement, ensuring they are well-supported and meet programme objectives.

Regularly meet with participants to monitor progress and provide guidance.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria

Registered Nurse Experience in cancer nursing and SACT passport qualification Mentorship qualification Chemotherapy module or equivalent “in service training” course Up to date and evidenced based knowledge of current clinical and professional issue Evidence of service development and implementing change

Desirable criteria

Teaching experience Evidence of quality improvement initiative Masters or working towards this / equivalent experience Cancer or Haematology Nursing Pathway or equivalent
