Job summary

The Consultant will have responsibilities in the management of incidents, including outbreaks of gastrointestinal infections, working with other consultants across the Division. These responsibilities include (i) closely monitoring surveillance systems to assess the need for field investigation, (ii) responding to requests for advice from public health physicians and others in the investigation and control of communicable diseases, and aiding promptly for field investigations where requested, (iii) deployment of staff in training and their supervision in field investigations.

The consultant will be expected to contribute to national policy on the control and prevention of infection. This may be discharged through supplying papers Department of Health, other national committees and stakeholders such as Food standards Agency, by developing and contributing to national guidance and guidelines relevant to the diagnosis, control and prevention of gastrointestinal infections and contributing to the development of broader CPH and UKHSA policy and strategy.

Main duties of the job

The principal functions of the post include:

i) development and oversight of surveillance and clinical and public health advice on the management of cases of gastrointestinal infections and outbreaks

ii) providing information and advice on the prevention and control of gastrointestinal infections,

iii) teaching and training and the development and conduct of relevant research. This is a highly specialist position the purpose of which is to provide senior level expert input into a wide range of activities.

Job responsibilities

The post is subject to the core competencies as set out by the Faculty of Public Health for Consultant appointments and the post holder will be expected to demonstrate expertise in all of them (Appendix A).

The post holder will provide expert clinical advice to GPs, Consultants in Health Protection. The post holder will also provide day to day clinical advice to support local clinicians and public health teams on the management of cases and outbreaks of gastrointestinal infections He/she will also provide clinical advice and support for incidents, including outbreaks.

The post holder will work closely with specific scientific, technical and administrative members of the Gastrointestinal Infections & Food Safety One Health Division and will provide line management and career development support to these individuals. He/she will work with other relevant professional staff in the Clinical and Public Health Group and all those working on gastrointestinal infections in UKHSA. The post holder will develop links with the Department of Health and Social Care, professional bodies and voluntary sector within the UK with an interest in infectious diseases.

The post holder will also work closely with senior colleagues to ensure that representation and support is provided to maintain the links between the Division and the relevant European Union designated surveillance networks (including the ECDC), the World Health Organization, and other national and international policy development forums.

The post holder will be expected to develop research in areas consistent with the work programme of the Division

The successful candidate will be appointed to the point of the Consultant salary scale appropriate to their years of seniority or if from a background other than medicine to NHS Agenda for Change Band 8d.

Inclusion in the GMC Full and Specialist Register with a license to practice (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview).

If included in the GMC Specialist Register/ in a specialty other than public health medicine, candidates must have equivalent training and/or appropriate experience of public health practice.

Public Health Specialty Registrar applicants who are not yet on the GMC Specialist Register must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they are within 6 months of gaining entry at the date of interview; all other applicants must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they have applied for inclusion in the GMC.

Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.

STAGE 1 Application & Sift:

Minimum 6 months training in health protection Experience of communicable disease control in a wide variety of settings including out of hours on call Postgraduate experience in infectious diseases epidemiology Personal expertise in dealing with complex clinical queries on vaccine Experience in the public health management of cases or incidents of gastrointestinal infections Research experience including protocol development Understanding of epidemiology and statistics, public health practice, health promotion, health economics and health care evaluation

Desirable

Minimum 12 months training in health protection, with at least 3 months at national and/or regional level Evidence of successful proposals to obtain research funding
