Clinical Research Associate in Cancer Cachexia

Cambridge, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

We are looking for a talented clinician to join a multidisciplinary team of clinical and basic scientists investigating the drivers of cancer cachexia.

This post represents an excellent opportunity for a medically qualified trainee (oncology, endocrinology or metabolism) to play a key role in undertaking human based studies, including detailed analysis of food intake and energy expenditure in a naturalistic setting.

There will also be opportunity to be involved in molecular and immunological laboratory analysis related to this project.

The team includes oncologists, endocrinologists and psychiatrists looking to focus their established experience in understanding disorders of body weight onto the problem of weight loss in cancer.

Our hypothesis is that molecular signals from the tumour itself, activating and interacting with neuroendocrine pathways in particular, are major drivers of the anorexia, systemic sickness and tissue wasting seen in cachexia.

We are part of the "CANcer Cachexia Action Network" (CANCAN) group, a US/UK consortium funded by Cancer Grand Challenges, a major initiative co-funded by Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute in the US.

The post is ideally suited to clinicians who have already some previous experience in these areas but this is not essential. The primary supervisor will be Dr Anthony Coll (Clinical Biochemistry/Institute of Metabolic Science) working closely with Dr Claire Connell (CRUK) and Professor Paul Fletcher (Psychiatry). The work will be carried out on a number of facilities on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The successful applicant will ideally have previous research experience and knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is expected

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until June 2027 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment. This appointment also requires an Honorary Clinical Contract.

This is an integrated appointment between the University and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust ("NHS Trust"). You will therefore also be issued with an Honorary Clinical Contract by the NHS Trust. You should be aware that if your contract with the NHS Trust is terminated your employment with the University will be terminated, and vice versa.

Closing date: 27th May 2024

Date of interview: To be confirmed

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.

The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
