In 2013, Europe’s top cancer charity, Cancer Research UK, combined with the University of Cambridge to fund the world class Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, situated on the Addenbrooke’s Biomedical Campus in Cambridge.

As part of the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, the Institute’s research ranges from basic cancer biology through translational cancer research to clinical application. The Institute currently houses over 400 researchers and support staff with 22 research groups and associated core facilities in a state-of-the-art research facility.

We are now recruiting a Lead Building Services Technician who will be responsible for both the maintenance of building services and the implementation of minor works and projects to support the effective operation and objectives of the Institute.

Delivering a high-quality service across the Institute, the role holder will:
Carry out breakdown and planned preventive maintenance
Establish systems to plan routine inspections
Assist with maintaining the departments compliance folder, including Water Risk Assessments and Pressure Systems Safety Regulations.

Carry out Health and Safety risk assessments and method statements and ensure both internal staff and contractors comply with these
Liaise with external contractors to repair or undertake routine servicing of plant and complete any remedial work required.
Determine and authorise the purchase of materials required and ensure that they are procured in accordance with financial regulations, on time and within an agreed budget
Co-ordinate and monitor Permit to Work system.
Issue detailed work orders, and ensure they are carried out timely and to high standards.
Raise issues with line management and take a pro-active approach to solving problems.
Carry out major and minor works and installations either by self or contractors.
Assist Project Managers with project works, contribute to project planning and managing of works on site.
Communicate effectively with Institute management, science staff, team members and colleagues.

The successful candidate will possess excellent customer service skills, have great attention to detail, be able to use their own initiative and have strong oral and written communication skills. They will have a broad range of experience in a maintenance environment and experience of working in building/ maintenance services, experience or involvement with managing minor works projects would be desirable. Knowledge and understanding of PPM maintenance and breakdown techniques in mechanical, electrical and civil trades and environments is essential. Although not essential, prior experience of working in the research sector would be advantageous. Weekend working and being able to respond to out-of-hours call outs in the event of emergencies is a requirement of the role, so a flexible approach to working hours will be required.

This post relies on the availability of external funds which are not part of the University’s central revenues. In the event that this funding should cease, your post may be at risk of redundancy.
