Product Manager

Farringdon, United Kingdom Public Digital Full time

Role Title: Product Manager

Salary: £70k-£90k

Location: London - a mixture of remote and hybrid working

Scope: Full Time - Perm/Contract

Application Closing Date: Monday 27th May

We are Public Digital, a digital transformation consultancy. We help global institutions that matter to thrive in the internet era. We apply the culture, processes, business models and technologies of the internet era to help teams build and run excellent services. Working with senior leadership and delivery teams alike, we operate globally, advising large organisations and governments on six continents.

We’re a values-driven, ethical organisation and we articulate our ten positions on the Public Digital website. We only work with organisations that match our values.

Attitude as much as skill, is critically important to us as a team and we look for entrepreneurialism, initiative, kindness, and a willingness to pitch in. Our theory of change is: Digital. Teams. Work - we fundamentally believe transformation is about people, and that change comes from creating great teams and empowering them.

The Role

What you’ll be doing

This role will initially start on an embedded 6 month project within one of our clients. As a seasoned Product Manager, you will work with the team to lead the vision for a key service and its related products, setting the day-to-day priorities to fulfill that vision and ensure the team delivers.

As part of our client’s 2 year transformation plan, they aim to identify and deliver a beacon service within the next 6 months, which can be iterated and adopted to further beacon sites nationally thereafter. This is a leadership role requiring a breadth of understanding of technology, agile, design and business but also one that can coach and develop teams in the ways of working for successful product management and service transformation.

In this role you will not be responsible for building and operating a specific product from scratch, but rather be working within a service team to deliver a transformed user experience, supported by an existing suite of products (some commodity, some in build) owned by the client organisation.

In this role you will:

  • Be responsible for the development, operation and continual improvement of  the client’s service working with both existing and new products in development
  • Work closely with the Service Designer to plan, prioritise and deliver
  • Manage the operational process of designing and running a product or service throughout its entire life cycle.
  • Understand users and interpret/communicate their functional and emotional needs, to make the correct product decisions
  • Develop an understanding of organisational and user constraints (e.g. financial, legal, policy) and challenge those which can be changed
  • Run and prioritise development sprints, supporting the Delivery Manager to identify and unblock and delivery challenges along the way
  • Draw upon experience of delivery of the first beacon service to refine and iterate future transformation
  • Implement a test and learn approach co-designing, delivering and continuously improving product delivery
  • Develop and assure good product development practices across the team
  • Contribute to the team developing a strong empathy and understanding of user needs, organisational goals and stakeholder priorities and how that translates into successful digital product delivery

How you‘ll do it

As an expert practitioner, you’ll be ready to dive straight in and be confident to set the tone and direction of the product, ensuring industry best practices are not only adhered to but understood and adopted by the client team.

You’ll need to approach product delivery in a way that maximises uptake of the product development methodologies, understanding the client’s needs and what will work best for them. You’ll be as much a coach as you will be a Product Manager.

This work is important to the client, so you’ll be confident to share your expertise, set direction and provide challenge and support across all levels of the organisation including senior decision makers.

Requirements

You

Essential attributes:

  • Deep experience of product management and product thinking, with an understanding of how to apply product management methodologies in contexts where an organisation is not “building” all the time
  • Can define and get buy-in for product definition, prioritisation and delivery approach
  • Expert in understanding and articulating the problems the team is trying to solve
  • Be comfortable acting as a key decision maker in the product development or service transformation process
  • Is bold and not constrained by old ways of thinking such as “that’s the way we do things around here”
  • Can think conceptually (and can possibly quickly sketch the concept rather than document it)
  • Can simplify things and avoid jargon
  • Be someone the organisation can trust, who can lead and motivate the team, and coach others
  • Ability to quickly grasp, empathise with and understand the challenges opportunities and specialist nature of the sector our client operates within

Benefits

What’s on Offer:

Be a part of our amazing work culture, to read more about it please follow this link to our Careers page which gives more details about our culture, employees and benefits.

How you will be assessed:

We would like to understand your background, attitudes, experiences and your motivation in wanting to work with us. We typically do this through the following process:

  • A Blind Sifting - To ensure the fairness of the process you will be initially assessed by your anonymized CV and by your answers to any sifting questions which will be blindly reviewed by the hiring managers and talent team. We therefore recommend completing your application when you have time to answer these questions to your fullest ability. Please note that we have seen an increase in candidates using AI Bots to complete their answers, we use tools designed to detect AI generated answers and will reject candidates if we suspect they have used this technology.
  • An initial phone interview of up to 30 minutes with the talent team, this call is designed to understand a little more about your experience as well as to understand your motivations for the role, why you wish to join Public Digital and to clarify any details from your application.
  • A formal panel interview with the hiring manager and other members of the team. This will likely include a case study sent to you in advance where you will be expected to present on a topic, followed by a Q&A on your presentation as well as more general questions about the role and your experience.
  • You will then have a more informal meeting with a peer, discussing topics more like company culture etc.

Important Note: Although this ad lists out what we look for in candidates, it is likely that we are missing other skills that you may have which could make you a great fit for our business. Research shows that female candidates tend to be less likely to apply to roles where they don’t check all the boxes over other genders. What we are therefore saying is if you feel you tick the majority of the boxes we have listed above, we would welcome an application from you as it never hurts to take a chance and apply
