1:1 Teaching Assistant (Trauma Informed Support)

Do you have experience of supporting pupils with Social Emotional Mental Health needs?

Teaching Personnel are looking for an experienced Teaching Assistant to work on a 1:1 basis with a Year 7 pupil joining a secondary school in Newport.  The pupil you will be supporting has SEMH needs, and the right Teaching Assistant for this role will have experience supporting young people with Trauma / ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences).

This is a full time opportunity and will begin 2nd September 2024.

Salary: £440 - £490 weekly pay (dependant on experience and qualifications)

Hours: 08:30 -15:30 – Monday – Friday (term time only)

Contract: Temporary until August 2025

The successful applicant will play a crucial role in assisting this pupils learning experience, working 1:1 with them each day. Ideally you will have experience with SEND/trauma informed practice or attachment awareness , and happy to be providing one-to-one support, facilitating activities to assist learning, and create a close relationships with the student.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply trauma-informed strategies to support the emotional and educational needs of students.
  • Collaborate with the SENCO and teaching staff to implement individual support plans.
  • Create a stable and reassuring environment that allows students to feel secure and understood.
  • Use a sensitive approach to manage behaviours and promote positive interactions.
  • Support the development of resilience and coping strategies in students.

Requirements:

  • Experienced working with pupils with challenging behaviour and those who have experienced trauma
    Experience of de-escalation training would be advantageous
  • The school would also consider candidates from youth work backgrounds, or similar roles
  • Excellent communication and the ability to build positive relationships with the students
  • Empathy and understanding
  • Willingness to enhance skills with professional training and development

Previous school based experience is advantageous for this role, however this would also suit someone who has worked in a residential support work setting.
