We are currently seeking a Senior Engineering Manager – Motors and Mechanical Design with extensive electric motor and mechanical design experience to join our team within Collins Aerospace Electronic Controls and Motor Systems, Solihull.

We have the extensive capabilities, comprehensive portfolio, and broad expertise to solve customers’ toughest challenges and to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global market for aircraft electric propulsion systems. 

Recently, the site at Solihull has developed the worlds first 1MW Motor and Control system for use in hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion. We pride ourselves on our pro-active approach to inclusivity, supporting diversity and being family orientated.

Job Description

As Senior Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of engineers in the development electric motors and mechanical packaging for motor controllers. You will ensure the team meets business and program needs by proactively planning staff allocations, development, and training. You will oversee engineering activities to ensure compliance with business processes and procedures, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in mechanical design, with a proven track record of leadership in engineering. You will excel in managing complex projects and possess the ability to inspire and guide a team of talented engineers, driving their professional growth and fostering a collaborative work environment.

Key Responsibilities

Promote the values and culture of Collins Promote the Collins values of Trust, Integrity and Respect across all aspects of the business.  Ensuring effective communication Support the flow of information by effective communication, including regular team meetings and individual meetings with staff. This includes communication to leadership to support rapid identification and resolution of issues.  Ensure the effective use of company resources Work with project managers and work package owners to allocate resources to support business objectivesPlan for development and training of staff to support future business skills needsEnsure timely and correct booking of hours workedReview and expenses submitted to ensure they are inline with company policy and correctly allocated  Ensure staff understand and comply with business processes Have a strong working knowledge of applicable business processesEnsure teams are aware of and familiar with processes that relate to their workIdentify and support process improvement activities  Support staff development and training Encourage and support staff development of individual development plans and training.Maintain a skills matrix for your function and plan training to support business skills needs.Hold regular reviews with individuals to agree and discuss objectives, development plans and progress against these.Ensure effective on-boarding of new starters so that they are aware of relevant business systems, key contacts, processes and procedures.  Promote staff wellbeing Accurately record staff absence and return-to-work processPromote the EH&S culture within your team and generally on the site. This includes timely flow down of training, role modelling good EH&S practice and ensuring compliance to EH&S policies and procedures.Support the hybrid work model by ensuring staff working remotely are aware of expectations, are available and effective in their work.  Support other engineering activities Support development of technology, engineering and program plansCollaborate with other business units and promote the sites capabilities and experienceLead work packages and programs as agreed with engineering leadershipProvide engineering support, guidance and advice to programs within technical area of expertise as needed.Support Bids and proposals with inputs from your functional area

Essential Skills and Experience

Technical Expertise Bachelor’s degree in science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) subject and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field with a minimum of 7 years’ experienceExperience of electric motor engineering design and/or electronics mechanical packaging in an engineering role.Knowledge of aerospace design standards and developments in electric propulsion technology.Strong problem-solving skills   Leadership Experience of managing or leading a team of engineersAbility to create a positive and creative environment through good communication, support and encouragement.Ability to effectively utilise skills within a team to develop solutions and innovation Communication and collaboration Ability to communicate with both internal and external stakeholders to foster positive relationships and engagement.Experience of mentoring and reviewing the work of other engineers Resource management Ability to work autonomously with limited oversightAbility to budget time and material for tasks to achieve business objectivesExperience of time planning and/or management for engineering projects or tasks Ethical behaviours Understand the importance and requirements of safe working practices in a development environmentAbility to make leadership aware of issues and concerns in a constructive way and help to identify and implement solutions.

Desirable Skills and Experience

Technical Expertise Subject matter expert level knowledge in one or more engineering or product design areas.Experience of a product NPI environment   Leadership Line management experience Communication and collaboration Representing your company or business unit as a main customer or supplier interface Resource management Experience of significant contribution to project bids and proposalsExperience of running a significant engineering project with a multi-disciplined engineering team
