London, United Kingdom Barts Health NHS Trust Full time

Job overview

Barts Health NHS Trust is one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers and one of the largest trusts in the NHS. It has a turnover of approximately £1.1 billion and 15,000 employees. In the heart of the East End of London, the area provides a rich blend of cultural, religious and spiritual diversity offering a wonderful opportunity to discover, learn and network with other faith communities.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible colleague committed to working within a multi-faith chaplaincy team across our group of hospitals to provide management support to the chaplaincy team and provision of religious, spiritual and pastoral care to patients, their relatives and staff. The duties of the post will include being the deputy to the Head of Chaplaincy, to share the management of chaplains within the team as allocated by Head of Chaplaincy, to manage a six-weekly rota of chaplains across all sites, to oversee the on-call rota across sites, to collate monthly data input from various sites and making provision for the specific spiritual needs of the community within Barts Health NHS Trust.

You will need strong personal and spiritual qualities, as well as considerable energy and initiative. You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and be a proven team worker, willing and able to build good working relationships within the team and beyond, particularly with people from other faith communities, local clergy and voluntary community agencies.

Management experience is desirable, along with proven capability to work collaboratively with those who you may disagree with.

Main duties of the job

To be the deputy to the Head of Chaplaincy and to support the Head of Chaplaincy to deliver and improve the chaplaincy service. As a leader and role model, work collaboratively with Head of Chaplaincy and other members of the chaplaincy team to offer spiritual, pastoral and religious care to patients, their relatives and staff within the Trust.

To be a part of the Chaplaincy Team to ensure that patients and visitors receive high-quality, effective pastoral, spiritual, and religious care. To increase staff awareness of the importance of spiritual care and to extend their knowledge through the provision of training and other related events. To be open to, and informed about, the spiritual and ethical concerns of staff arising from their work.

To ensure that patients, relatives, staff and students requiring religious, pastoral and spiritual care from the post-holder’s own faith tradition receive appropriate attention and care, and that prompt referrals are made to other chaplains and faith/belief representatives when requested.

This post incorporates a Trust-wide responsibility for the pastoral, spiritual, and religious care of patients to be shared with other chaplains and volunteers. In other words, generic pastoral care will be offered to all who require support. Spiritual care and support to the bereaved will also be an essential part of the role.

Responsibility for managing an agreed number of staff, volunteers and respondingto emergency on-call requests is also integral to the post.
