Job Summary:
The Ophthalmology Band 5 Nurse is responsible for delivering comprehensive nursing care to patients with eye conditions. This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, performing specialized ophthalmic procedures, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.
Main Responsibilities:
Patient Assessment and Care Planning:
Conduct detailed assessments of patients' eye conditions, including taking medical histories and performing visual examinations.
Develop individualized care plans based on the assessments, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
Prioritize patient care needs based on clinical urgency and individual requirements.
Implementation of Care:
Administer prescribed treatments such as eye drops, medications, and assist in minor surgical procedures.
Perform and assist with specialized ophthalmic procedures, including but not limited to intravitreal injections, laser treatments, and diagnostic tests like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography.
Ensure all ophthalmic equipment and instruments are properly prepared, used, and maintained.
Patient Monitoring and Evaluation:
Monitor patients' progress, response to treatments, and overall condition. Regularly perform visual acuity tests and other assessments to evaluate changes in patients' conditions.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records and documentation.
Patient Education and Support:
Educate patients and their families on eye conditions, treatment options, and postoperative care.
Provide guidance on maintaining eye health and preventing disease.
Address patient queries and concerns, ensuring they understand their care plan and expected outcomes.
Team Collaboration:
Collaborate with ophthalmologists, optometrists, orthoptists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure cohesive and coordinated patient care.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions, contributing to patient care decisions.
Support and mentor junior staff, nursing students, and new team members.
Quality and Safety:
Adhere to clinical guidelines, policies, and procedures to maintain high standards of patient safety and care.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and research projects to enhance service delivery.
Follow stringent infection control practices to prevent healthcare-associated infections.
Administrative Duties:

The role is based in a clinical setting, which may include outpatient clinics, community hub. The nurse will interact with patients of all ages and backgrounds, providing care in both routine and emergency situations. The position may require to work cross sites
