Overview

The College of Medicine and Health is one of three colleges at Bangor University. The College, through the University, is formally linked to the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board enabling an integrated approach to developing research, training, medical and healthcare education that serves the needs of North Walesand beyond.

The Project

The School is the University’s main focus for education to support the health and care professional workforce and the sole provider for radiography undergraduate provision across North Wales. The Diagnostic Radiography programme, commissioned by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), is situated at our Wrexham campus. The successful candidate is expected to work across the School of Health Sciences in Bangor and Wrexham An operational DR X-ray room is in place and desktop simulation VR software is installed in a newly refurbished computer laboratory onsite. The School has an excellent research portfolio and hosts research centres or clusters for health economics, aging and dementia, and a health and social care. We pay attention to demonstrating the links between our research and teaching activities, and in providing our students with excellent learning experiences that equip them with the ability to succeed in their professional careers.

Purpose of the Job

The job will focus on leading and delivering the diagnostic radiography programme with the team. The post holder will be expected to engage with and undertake a range of academic, administrative and professional School roles, for example, professional lead, personal tutor, module leader, dissertation supervisor. Partnership is a key theme within the job, the successful candidate will work in partnership with colleagues, students, service users and service providers across the NHS and other partners. There will be an expectation of leading in the design, delivery and promotion of existing and new academic programmes, and other creative opportunities that enable the School to contribute to prevent problems and improve the health and care for the people of North Wales and beyond.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching duties will include:

Lead the programme and provide oversight for validation, accreditation and quality assurance.

Lead on scholarly, professional and improvement-related activities pertaining to diagnostic radiography, in partnership with students, stakeholders and service users.

Plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.

Support students with proactive engagement in learning, and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work.

Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects.

Act as personal tutor to a number of undergraduate and postgraduate students, providing advice, guidance and support.

Contribute to the growth and improvement of the practice learning circuit capacity and quality, and provide leadership to the academic team to support students’ learning in practice.

Actively engage in strategic and project-related activities that maximise student engagement, and that mitigate the risks of attrition.

Lead the development of new modules including post-graduate provision, and the re-design and improvement of existing modules.

Contribute to the development of new programmes and undertaking role of module coordinator or contributing to module co-ordination.

Undertake an active role in mentoring less experienced members of staff within the College/School.

Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School (e.g. membership of School boards and task groups, addressing/supporting under graduate and postgraduate student experience, contributing to community engagement).

Through any involvement with partners, share information and collaborate to support partners’ future education and training requirements.

Provide course leadership to designated academic programmes, paying particular attention to marketing and recruitment, programming, and quality assurance.

To contribute to the promotion and external profile of the School.

Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiative.

Keep abreast of new professional, educational and related social, economic and technological developments.

Maintain and develop Scholarly activities in line with University and College strategies.

Publish evidence of scholarship related to learning and teaching in books, articles and/or papers in academic journals.

Ensure adherence to organisational and professional body (i.e. HCPC) requirements in all aspects of academic work, and in personal professional development.

Administrative and wider contribution duties will include:

Participate in the student recruitment and induction procedures of the School (e.g. School and University Open Days).

Contribute to the School's management, and participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (e.g. organisation of exams, contribute to accreditation/QA).

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training:

Essential:

Professional registration (on the appropriate part of the register) with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Postgraduate degree in a relevant subject area. Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCertHE) or equivalent OR Recognised by the HEA as a Fellow / Recognised by Advance HE as a Fellow against Descriptor 2 of the UKPSF (or minimum of 3 years substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Fellowship within 3 years of appointment).

Desirable:

PhD, or near to completion. Specialist qualifications in radiography.

Experience/Knowledge:

Teaching Essential:

A sound knowledge of contemporary policy and practice in Diagnostic Radiography. Evidence of teaching in clinical or academic settings. Experience of module development and delivery in Higher Education.

Teaching Desirable:

Evidence of scholarship relating to learning and teaching through publication of books, articles and/or papers in academic journals. Evidence of conference and/or seminar presentations on pedagogy. Evidence of good / innovative pedagogic practice.

Experience/Knowledge:

Scholarship Essential:

Capability to develop and manage projects, and to disseminate results through presentation at relevant conferences, publication in relevant journals, social and other media.

Scholarship Desirable:

Capability to publish scholarship in peer-reviewed journals of international standard, conferences, social and other media.

Skills/Abilities:

Essential:

Innovative and exciting approaches to teaching and research. Demonstrate the ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on own initiative. Excellent verbal and written skills. Demonstrable computer skills, including MS Office, Powerpoint and Excel. This could also include use of Blackboard and other on-line learning platforms.

Other:

Essential:

An appreciation of the bilingual context of health and care delivery and Higher Education in North Wales. Driving licence or alternative ability to travel to various locations as needed to undertake the duties of the role successfully.

Desirable

An ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh.
