Job overview

The Pleural specialist nurse will be required to provide a specialist nursing service for patients with pleural disease and will contribute to the care of patients requiring pleural procedures including chest drains and pleural aspirations. They will provide education, advice and support to patients and their relatives/carers. They will be required to work as an autonomous practitioner, taking responsibility for this patient group, providing assessment, support, and information. They will liaise with all healthcare professionals providing care to pleural patients, and the role will include maintenance of accurate records, involvement in audit, clinical research, and participation in multi-disciplinary teaching. The role will also include working regular days working on bronchoscopy lists in the intervention unit.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be required to provide a specialist nursing service for patients with pleural disease and will contribute to the care of patients requiring pleural procedures including chest drains and pleural aspirations. They will provide education, advice and support to patients and their relatives/carers, both in the hospital setting and, in the community. This will also require effective communication with district nurses and GP surgeries.

They will be required to work as an autonomous practitioner, providing assessment, support, and information to inpatient and outpatient services. They will liaise with all healthcare professionals providing care to pleural patients, and the role will include maintenance of accurate records, involvement in audit, clinical research, and participation in multi-disciplinary teaching. The role will also include working regular days working on bronchoscopy lists in the respiratory intervention unit.

We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills who has a passion for respiratory medicine and wants to learn more about pleural disease and management.

Previous working in an acute respiratory environment is essential for this role, although full training regarding pleural management will be provided, as you will be working alongside our current pleural nurse specialist.
