About the role

We are looking a researcher with policy engagement expertise to join Behavioural Research UK (BR-UK), a new national leadership hub funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for five years from November .

BR-UK’s objectives are to:

facilitate evidence-based decision making through timely, high impact, and independent research on human behaviour that meets the needs of policymakers, industry, and civil society; and

build a critical mass of researchers with the knowledge and skills to transform our understanding of human behaviour by applying a diverse range of relevant methods.

BR-UK is linked to a dedicated Centre for Doctoral Training Plus (CDT+) in behavioural research, as part of a ‘hub and spoke’ model.

This unique post will be employed by the UCL Centre for Behaviour Change and seconded into the Government Office for Science (GO-Science or GO-S).

Term : This post is full time for 36 months with the possibility of extension to

Location : The post will be primarily based at the GO-S office (10 Victoria Street, London SW1H 0NN) and involve working closely with UCL and BR-UK, with an expectation of at least 2 days per week at GO-S.

Reporting: The candidate will join a cross-sector team that spans academia and government and act as a key link between policy makers and the wider BR-UK research team. The post holder will report jointly to GO-S and UCL. The post holder will have access to the training and networking opportunities that ESRC offers to its cohort of government-based policy fellows.

About you

Experience and track record in leading behavioural or social science research for policy audiences, working with teams to identify research questions and methodology, through leading a major collaborative research initiative or group, and/or leading a breadth of research projects and teams across a range of issues and methods. Experience and track record in translating and embedding research in policy or other applied contexts, through co-production of research, collaboration on policy- or strategy-development, or fulfilling a relevant strategic advisory role in government over a sustained period. An understanding of theories of behaviour and of behaviour change, including the contexts within which these can be used, and how to apply these in empirical research and evidence synthesis. Understanding of relevant research methods to address behavioural research questions Experience of conducting systematic or rapid reviews and encouraging their practical use Experience of proactively creating, maintaining and promoting a strong network of professional connections across research and policy contexts Ability to critically appraise and synthesise different types of evidence Strong stakeholder management skills, including demonstrable record of working with discretion and tact on sensitive topics to maximise impact. Outstanding interpersonal, negotiation, presentation and communication (written and verbal) skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts and research findings to non-technical audiences and to champion the relevance of behavioural research to non-specialist audiences (policy, STEM)
