London, Greater London, United Kingdom London School of Economics and Political Science Full time

LSE is committed to building a diverse, equitable and truly inclusive university

Salary from £50,606 to £58,505 per annum with potential to progress to £65,157 pa inclusive of London allowance

This is a fixed term appointment until June 2025, with potential to extend subject to further funding.

The Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment (GRI) has established a new Centre for Economic Transition Expertise (CETEx) to support the delivery of sustainable, inclusive and resilient economies and financial systems across Europe. We seek to appoint an experienced Policy Fellow to deliver policy-oriented research projects within its Monetary and Financial Markets pillar, focused on the role of central banks and financial supervisors in the context of nature loss and deforestation. The appointee will employ their reputation for rigorous, user-focused analysis and policy-orientated work, at a senior level, to ensure that research outputs have demonstrable impact and inform the public debate.

The post holder will lead key aspects of a research, policy and engagement programme on central banking, financial supervision and nature/biodiversity loss with a specific focus on deforestation and Latin America, by identifying policy relevant research questions and contributing to the intellectual shape and design of the overall programme, including preparing a range of impactful research and policy-relevant publications and other high-quality outputs. They will also lead the organisation of engagement activities with senior policy experts and policymakers to ensure that outputs have demonstrable impact and inform decision-making, as well as work with non-traditional financial sector stakeholders, including indigenous peoples and local communities, on nature-loss related impacts and dependencies.

Candidates should have an MSc in economics, climate/environmental governance, environmental/ecological economics or a closely related field. They will have work experience in a central bank or financial supervisor, working on environmental risks, biodiversity/nature loss, deforestation and climate change; and a strong understanding of biodiversity impact and of dependency studies on nature-related exposures and risks preferably in the context of a central bank or financial supervisor.

They will have strong experience in undertaking academic research on topics relating to climate change, environmental degradation and the low carbon transition, and experience in working with senior policy and decision-makers in international organisations, central banks and supervisors, and related sustainable financial networks. A strong regional and international network of climate and nature contacts in the financial policy space, with a focus on Latin America, is desirable.

The other criteria that will be used when shortlisting for this post can be found on the person specification, which is attached to this vacancy on the LSE's online recruitment system.

In addition to competitive salary other benefits include an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave entitlement, hybrid and flexible working, training and development opportunities.
