The Role and Key Responsibilities
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Casualty Reduction Team within the Sussex Police. Operations Command Casualty Reduction Officers will seek to provide a dedicated enforcement and education resource within the Partnerships team, capable of being tasked to support the various Casualty Reduction initiatives undertaken by the Police Service and partner agencies. Reporting to the Casualty Reduction Sergeant and working from Shoreham-by Sea Police Station, you will work closely with our team managing the online anti-social driving reporting tool, partner agencies, roads policing, and safety camera teams to reduce the number of those killed or seriously injured on the roads of Sussex.
The role is varied and includes attending public engagement events, operational activity including NPCC events and campaigns, and supporting Community SpeedWatch groups across the county. As part of the role you will also visit drivers who may pose a significant risk to other road users, conducting eyesight tests and fitness to drive assessments. Day to day the successful candidate will proactively patrol the road networks dealing with those who commit moving traffic offences with a particular focus on the Fatal Five.
The shift pattern is currently Monday to Friday day shifts with weekends off however, where there are events to support at the weekend or in the evening, there is an expectation that the Casualty Reduction Officer will be flexible to operational demands.
Key Responsibilities
1. Conducting proactive patrols and tasked activity on the road networks of Sussex with a particular focus on Fatal 5+ offences and KSI reduction strategies.
2. Managing enquiries that are received from other partners such as the Collisions Process Unit and those generated by external referrals. This can involve making home visits to the subject who may have been involved in a collision or where there has been concern expressed about their ability to drive and conducting eyesight tests and fitness to drive assessments and submitting reports to the DVLA where appropriate.
3. Planning and delivery of Road Safety Enforcement activity in line with NPCC/Tispol calendars and a defined road safety strategy.
4. Providing help, support and information to the public to encourage them to review / improve their driving skills.
5. Planning interventions based on evidenced reports by colleagues and members of the public and targeting high risk offenders by proactive and robust enforcement action.
6. Supporting the Abandoned Vehicles Officer reviewing submissions made from local authority partners regarding abandoned vehicles across the county and authorising the disposal of the same where appropriate. Supporting the Casualty Reduction Administration Team, reviewing Operation Crackdown digital media submissions and making transparent evidence-based disposal decisions as and when needed.
7. Preparing evidential files for court and liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service.
8. Supporting colleagues in the Investigations Team with enquiries and arrests to assist their investigations.
9. Attending public engagement events in support of road safety themes, presenting information to a diverse range of people in small or large groups.
10. Managing the investigative process by making effective use of police systems maintaining detailed reports.
11. To form and maintain relationships with wider key partners to deliver collaborative goals.
Skills & Experience
It is essential that the applicant has completed their Probationary period and any other initial training modules.
To have experience in delivering roadside enforcement and knowledge of Road Traffic legislation.
It would be desirable that applicants have already attained a Standard Response Driver course, be Initial Phase Pursuit & fast road trained.
Knowledge and understanding of Road Safety Partnership capabilities and business.
The ability to work alone and as part of a team.
The ability to prioritise tasks, using the NDM, adapting to changing threats and priorities.
Manage time effectively, working with the minimum of supervision.
Knowledge of intelligence gathering and dissemination processes and related activities.
