The Peer Supporter role is a vital part of our plan to continually improve the services that we provide. The roles are aimed at people with personal lived experience and/or experience of caring for someone, who has lived with an eating disorder.

The principal role of the posts will be to support service users or carers throughout their journey through our services, to establish greater control over their lives and decisions, and build resilience during their care and treatment.

This is a unique opportunity to work as part of a Clinical Team, utilising your personal experience to inspire people through their own recovery journey. The roles focus on creating trusting relationships whilst supporting service users (and/or carers) in their journey of recovery.

Main duties of the job

The principal role of the post holder will be to support service users by developing mutual peer relationships based on their own lived experience, in some services this principal role may relate to carers.

A key feature of the post will be the person's unique lived experience of eating disorder services and their recovery (and / or of supporting someone in a caring capacity) and how the wisdom that comes with this can support others on their personal journey.

The majority of the post holder's time will be devoted to having direct contact with service users, mainly on a one to one basis but at times in group settings.

They will support service users to identify aspects of life that give meaning, hope, value and purpose whilst recognising that each individual's wellbeing is distinctive and deeply personal, conversations may include reference to their own recovery journey.

They will support staff to identify, understand and respect aspects of life that give meaning, hope, value and purpose to service users and / or carers, creating an awareness in staff of the key role that service user's experience may play in their identity and how it influences their wellbeing.

Job responsibilities

Due to the expansion and development of the Community Adult Eating Disorder Service an opportunity has arisen to expand the existing multidisciplinary team (MDT).

A key feature of the peer supporter role will be the successful candidates unique lived experience of an eating disorder and the wisdom that comes from their own personal recovery journey. This will include lived experience of eating difficulties and a willingness to learn how their experience can be used to support those experiencing eating distress. The principal role of the post holder will be to support service users to establish greater control over their lives and their decisions, during their care and treatment whilst working towards recovery.

In collaboration with the patient, their families, and MDT members the successful candidate will contribute to all areas of a patients care both directly via patient contact and indirectly as part of MDT working. They will help patients develop recovery and wellbeing focussed care plans, supporting individuals who are the Community Adult Eating Disorder Service

The post holder will be expected to work with other peer supporters across the Trust, and this will include spending time working into our Recovery Colleges.

Ongoing peer support and individual clinical supervision will be a key aspect of the role to ensure adequate support in what will be a new and challenging position.

We have a very active Lived Experience Advisory Group (LEAG) within the service and the successful candidate would provide a key link between the clinical team and this advisory group whilst recognising these distinct and separate roles.

They will be able to negotiate and maintain that difficult balance between being an NHS employee whilst working alongside and supporting those in receipt of NHS care.

They will be able to role model compassionate care that is based on empathy, kindness, respect, and dignity.

The post holder will contribute to the further delivery of this service in line with the NICE Guidance, DOH, NHS England and trust policy and process in determining developmental priorities.

Education and Qualification

Essential

Good level of secondary education Commitment to complete the CNTW Peer Supporter Educational Programme

Desirable

Completion of Peer Support Specialist Training or other similar peer support training Completion of Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) training Completion of WRAP Educator training

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

Personal lived experience of using or caring for someone who has used eating disorder services Experience of being in a supportive and enabling role

Experience of a person-centred approach

Skills and Competencies
