Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW) value the vital role that Peer Supporters provides in continuing to develop and improve the quality of service that Service Users and Carers receive.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Peer Supporter to join the Newcastle Treatment and Recovery Team (NTaR) within the Central Locality. Due to the specialist nature of this role we are looking for someone who has lived experience of addictions and experience of offering peer support to vulnerable service users.

NTaR is a partnership between CNTW, Humankind and Changing Lives. We are an integrated team comprising nurses, social workers, recovery co coordinators and Consultant Psychiatrists delivering high quality, evidenced based care via structured interventions. CNTW was CQC rated outstanding on last inspection.

The post holder will support the continued development of the Peer Supporter role within our drug and alcohol services as well as providing experienced support to service users utilising their own personal lived experience of substance use, services and their recovery and how the wisdom that comes with this can support others on their personal journey.

The Senior Peer Supporter will support service users to identify aspects of life that give meaning, hope, value and purpose whilst recognising that each individual’s wellbeing is distinctive and deeply personal, conversations may include reference to their own recovery journey.

As a Senior Peer Supporter you will be expected to offer a different perspective and understanding of substance use addictions through:
Sharing stories to find a mutual connection.

Supporting individuals to identify personal goals and plans.

Group work, as well as 1:1 work, using wellness plans and tools. You will co-develop and facilitate groups, dependent on your experience, working with a multi-disciplinary team.

Recording progress and concerns, working in a manner which ensures confidentiality and security.

Building carer confidence towards their own aspirations in life and extending their own networks and support.

Alongside supporter our service users, they will support staff to identify, understand and respect aspects of life that give meaning, hope, value and purpose to service users and / or carers, creating an awareness in staff of the key role that service user’s experience may play in their identity and how it influences their wellbeing.

We aim to attract and retain a diverse, talented and committed workforce, who are caring and compassionate and therefore able to meet the needs of the modern NHS both now and in the future. We want to recruit staff, invest in developing their skills and expertise, and support career development and progression.

As an employee of CNTW, the well-being of all of our staff is vitally important. You will have several avenues of support but should also feel confident in your own personal skills and abilities to draw upon your own resilience’s and strengths to sustain well-being throughout this role.

This a full time post however, part time working hours will be considered.

This will be a challenging, but rewarding role, working with people presenting with a range of substance misuse difficulties and having co existing mental health issues and risks. Therefore you must feel confident in working to demonstrate and communicate strong recovery values, inspiring hope and empowerment in others. You must have the ability to communicate where there are barriers to understanding, and must be able to work as part of a team. The principal role of the post holder will be to support service users by developing mutual peer relationships based on their own lived experience, in some services this principal role may relate to carers.
