Job summary

This Fellowship is available for commencement in August 2024 year at the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the post is for a fixed 12 month term.

It is open to all doctors who hold Full registration with the GMC and have successfully completed foundation year 2 training, along with a further 2 years of acute specialty training (inclusive of one year of anaesthetics experience), who wish to gain further experience in the management of critically unwell patients with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions, and have an interest in medical education.

The Clinical Skills and National Repository Fellowship is offered as part of the role. This is an exciting opportunity for a doctor with a strong interest in the future of postgraduate medical education and training focusing on the development of innovative clinical skills and cadaveric courses.

The rest of the time will be spent performing the clinical duties of the role in Adult Critical Care.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant is expected to participate in on-calls on the Senior Critical Care Rota, as well as the day-to-day clinical and managerial running of the critical care units.

The successful applicant to this role will work as part of the PMED team to develop Clinical Skills and National Repository projects and training opportunities.

Medical Education Fellows benefit from funding to support the educational component of this role for an academic qualification ( to the value of £3,000.

For trainees, the Fellowship may be undertaken in-programme or out-of-programme. There are various options including in-training, less-than- full-time training, OOPT, OOPE and OOPP. We will work with you to find the working and training arrangements that suit you and your department best.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Senior Critical Care rota doctor will be in charge of the other trainees and fellows out of hours under the leadership and support of the Duty Critical Care Consultant on-call. Clinical duties will be conducted at both the Queens Medical Centre and at the Nottingham City Hospital. Where possible, the post will be tailored to individual training needs.

Clinical Responsibilities will include (not exhaustive):

Perform daily reviews on ICU patients and present findings on the MDT ward round In conjunction with the consultant support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff as the senior member of the critical care team Review critically unwell patients outside of critical care Admit, stabilise and formulate an initial management plan for critically unwell adults Competently initiate ventilation, use vasopressors, insert CVC and Arterial Lines and be able to transfer the critically unwell patient.

During your time in post you will also:

Support the learning and development of other members of the critical care team (inc undergraduates) Participate in clinical governance and quality improvement. Set individual goals

The Fellowships provide 2-days per week (on average) to work as part of the Postgraduate Medical Education Department (PMED) to develop and deliver a selection of Clinical Skills and National Repository projects. You would be expected to contribute regularly to PMED clinical skills teaching sessions and be a regularly member of the Clinical Skills Teaching Faculty.

The role will be based cross site at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The educational component includes access to an office space, desk and a PC or laptop. There will also be a five-day induction and training programme incorporating QSIR practitioner training and relevant medical education sessions.

This post is whole time and is covered by the Medical and Dental Staff Terms and Conditions of Service. Doctors applying for this post from overseas should note that prior NHS experience is a prerequisite and we would recommend applying for one of our Trust Grade posts in the first instance.
