Position Overview

We are seeking a full-time Senior Consultant to oversee responsibilities in Critical Care Medicine within our esteemed healthcare institution.

The recent expansion of our services has led to the creation of new positions for Senior Consultants in Critical Care Medicine. The primary focus of this role will be on clinical responsibilities within the critical care environment, while also providing opportunities for educational involvement, administrative duties, and professional development.

The contract will consist of a defined number of Programmed Activities (PAs), allocated as 8 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) PAs in Critical Care and 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). There is flexibility to utilize up to 2 of the 8 DCC PAs in a related specialty as part of a tailored job plan.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidates will integrate into a collaborative team of Critical Care consultants, fostering a supportive atmosphere that is conducive to professional growth. This environment is ideal for new appointments to thrive.

New consultants will be expected to participate in structured critical care rotations and must demonstrate the ability to work across multiple hospital campuses.

Responsibilities will include participation in the adult critical care on-call roster, with current night shifts occurring at a frequency of 1:9, and weekend duties as required. This schedule may evolve with anticipated growth in critical care capacity and staffing.

Additionally, the successful candidates will engage in educational activities as necessary.

New consultants will have the opportunity to select a mentor from the existing team of Critical Care consultants.

About Our Institution

Critical Care Facilities

Our critical care units are equipped with advanced facilities, including a 29-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a separate 20-bed High Dependency Unit (HDU). The institution handles a significant volume of admissions annually, providing a diverse range of surgical and medical specialties.

Our outreach team operates around the clock, offering support across various medical and surgical departments, ensuring comprehensive care for patients transitioning from critical care.

Job Responsibilities

Appointees will be expected to fulfill the following duties as outlined in the agreed Job Plan:

  • Manage patients under their care, encompassing a full spectrum of surgical and medical emergencies.
  • Collaborate with fellow consultants to deliver a comprehensive elective and emergency service.
  • Provide reciprocal coverage during periods of absence.
  • Maintain ongoing responsibility for patient care and departmental operations.
  • Offer coverage for short-term absences or sick leave.

These responsibilities are subject to review based on the evolving needs of the service, with any changes mutually agreed upon by the appointee and their colleagues.

Governance and Quality Assurance

Each consultant is expected to actively participate in clinical governance initiatives, including clinical audits, incident reporting, and risk management.

Educational Contributions

Our institution is a prominent center for medical education, and the successful candidate will play a vital role in both undergraduate and postgraduate training.

Research Opportunities

We maintain strong ties with academic institutions, providing opportunities for research and innovation in various clinical specialties.

Additional Responsibilities

Appointees may choose to undertake additional roles alongside their clinical responsibilities, subject to prior discussion and agreement with the Head of Service.

Candidate Requirements

Professional Registration

  • Full registration with the relevant medical council.
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register in Intensive Care Medicine.

Professional Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized training program in critical care medicine.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Intensive Care Medicine.

Clinical Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in Adult Critical Care Medicine.
  • Competence in patient transfer and retrieval.

Management and Leadership Skills

  • Ability to develop and implement service delivery ideas.
  • Strong leadership and teamwork capabilities.

Teaching and Research

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Able to effectively teach and mentor junior staff.
