Job summary

We are looking for a specialist Occupational Therapist to work with us at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Neuro Rehab & Stroke.

The post is full time and you'd be working both at the Bradley Unit in Woking (20 bedded Regional 2b Neurorehabilitation Unit) and in Stroke Rehab (Phoenix) at St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey.

Delivering excellence in patient care and patient experience is our driving force. We are committed to personal development through supervision and appraisal, as well as internal/external training. Staff involvement in research and development is encouraged, with opportunities for service evaluation, audit and quality improvement initiatives.

There is a 7-day service and you are expected to participate as required. Flexible working or part time requests will be considered at the point of interview. There would be occasions when you will be expected to transfer your skills to support acute stroke/neurological patients/ESD patients as the service requires.

Main duties of the job

Undertake advanced assessments, formulate clinical diagnoses, problem lists and patient led goals, to provide appropriate treatment for patients with neurological conditions which may be acute or sub-acute, complex and / or chronic presentations

Work as an autonomous practitioner to undertake a significant specialist clinical caseload, working without direct supervision

Contribute to board rounds or problem patient sessions to ensure that patients get the right treatment, at the right time in the right place

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, putting patient care and the patient experience first

Show passion for providing a high level of care and safeguarding to patients in our services

Have the ability to use initiative, communicate with empathy and be an effective team player

Facilitate onward planning and safe discharge from hospital

Participate in the development of Physiotherapists/ Occupational Therapists and Assistants within clinical speciality through training, competencies and supervision

Demonstrate leadership skills and deputise for the team leads whenever necessary

Actively participate in service development and contribute to monitoring of standards of practice, and take personal responsibility in professional development and professional registration requirements

Participate in specific 7 day working rotas

Main Duties of the post:

Effective planning of daily caseload management, utilising prioritisation skills and responding to urgent referrals and unpredictable work patterns. Balance clinical and managerial tasks with other patient related and professional activities as required. Undertake comprehensive and specialist assessments including for those with diverse or complex presentations / multipathologies. Use clinical reasoning skills, assessment techniques and diagnostic procedures to assess and develop individualised treatment programmes. Use a range of treatment / management options, including patient education and use of group work / classes. Formulate accurate prognoses and recommend best course of intervention. Develop comprehensive, timely discharge plans, liaising with teams across the pathway. Evaluate practice. Demonstrate the physical ability to carry out Occupational Therapy assessments and interventions, including cognitive and therapeutic handling. This post includes frequent light to moderate physical effort. Effective communication with all disciplines within the organisation and externally, to ensure effective multidisciplinary working. Communicate sensitive and complex information effectively to patients and their families. Assess patients understanding of treatment proposals, gain consent and work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment. Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools with patients in order to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. Appreciate cultural differences and take these into account in practice. Manage frequently highly stressful situations, including patients who maybe occasionally aggressive or confused. Ensure timely and effective communication regarding changes in care or treatment, and on all professional matters. Maintain documentation in line with professional and Trust standards. Attend and actively participate in meetings including board rounds, MDT meetings, case conferences, staff meetings. Support and supervise junior Occupational Therapy staff and assistants with their patients as required. Keep up to date with developments and current research, implementing changes to your clinical practice. Participate in the appraisal scheme as an appraisee and appraiser. Supervise students. Deputise for the team leader and provide cross cover when required. Provide training for junior staff, students, or assistants/technicians, other therapists, nursing staff and care workers within the clinical area. Maintain professional competence and personal development through CPD opportunities. Monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others, by taking responsibility for identifying and assessing potential risks involved in work activities and processes. Complete relevant risk assessments and incident reports. Maintain competence to use equipment safely. Demonstrate a good understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk.
