Job overview

This exciting new post is based in the Paediatric Diabetes Team at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The Team is one of the largest in the Northwest and looks after a population of predominantly type one diabetes patients. Due to the ethnic mix of the local population, we also have one of the largest cohorts of type 2 diabetes patients together with more unusual diabetes diagnoses such as Alstrom syndrome, maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young and DIDMOAD syndrome.

This postholder would be working closely as part of the multidisciplinary team which consists of. Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Diabetes Dietitians, a Diabetes Dietetic Support Assistant, Diabetes Healthcare Assistant and a Diabetes Emotional and well-being team together with consultants and administrative support.

The post represents an exciting opportunity for somebody who may have an interest in Children's diabetes to develop their skills and further an interest. The service uses the latest diabetes technologies, such as continuous blood glucose monitoring and hybrid closed loop technology to improve outcomes in children and young people with diabetes.

It is anticipated that candidates applying for this post will want to make a longer term commitment to the service. Full training and supervision will be provided, and the post will include support to apply for and complete further postgraduate training qualifications in paediatric diabetes.

Main duties of the job

1. Providing safe, personal and effective care to children and young people with diabetes, and general paediatric medical problems.

2. Working as part of the diabetes MDT including leading on specific areas and projects.

3. Developing and maintaining competencies in paediatric diabetes including therapies such as continuous glucose monitoring and pump therapy.

4. Participating in audit and quality improvement within the service

Working for our organisation

Paediatric diabetes services nationally are engaged in a journey of continuous quality improvement supported by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. The successful candidate will be closely involved in this work with opportunities to work on collaborative projects with other services.

The paediatric diabetes team are also very involved in research and in recent years have taken part in a number of trials.

Transition is a key part of successful diabetes care, and the Trust has a successful transition clinic catering for children between the age of 16 and 19 years, with dedicated transition staff to support this process. This successful candidate would be involved in transitioning patients from paediatric to adult services.

There will also be opportunities for further development with leadership training and opportunities existing both within the trust and external to the trust for service development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Participating in weekly multidisciplinary diabetes clinics to support children and families in management of their diabetes

2. Providing medical input into the diabetes MDT.

3. Overseeing the completion of diabetes annual reviews and national audit submission with support.

4. Participation in outpatient general paediatric clinics

Person specification Knowledge Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of medical training & evidence of competence in relevant procedures
  • Knowledge of education & training issues from completion of UK based Medical degree or a minimum of 12 months previous NHS experience
  • Good communication skills with ability to motivate colleagues – both medical & non-medical
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Demonstrates professionalism in attitude & application

Qualifications Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice
  • Completed at least 4 years full-time postgrad training (or equivalent if part-time) at least 2 of which will be in a specialty training programme or equivalent experience and competencies
Desirable criteria
  • Full MRCPH qualification or success in at least 2 out of 3 MRCPCH written papers
  • APLS or EPLS & NLS trained
  • Evidence of publications in journals
  • Training in advanced communication skills or motivational interviewing.
Training Essential criteria
  • Experience & training in Child Protection to Level 3 standards or be able to demonstrate this before taking up the post
  • Willingness to undertake further training and qualifications in paediatric diabetes as required
Desirable criteria
  • PG Cert in medical education or equivalent

  • Practical experience in management of a wide range of conditions in General Paediatrics, Neonatal medicine & Child Protection
