Job summary
To undertake the Health Education England programme for upper Gi Gastroscopy or lower Gi Flexible sigmoidoscopy. This course will require you to undertake academic modules in association with the assigned university and then perform practical training within the Endoscopy unit. You will be provided with the relevant educational and practical skills required to perform diagnostic and therapeutic upper or lower GI endoscopy and on completion be competent to work as an independent autonomous practitioner in the specialist endoscopy field.

Job responsibilities
Key Result Areas:
The post holder will:
Undertake a minimum of 2 training lists per week
Provide expert advice and education, supporting patients, relatives and other healthcare professionals within this specialist field.
Be assigned a training timetable to ensure that they are able to achieve the skills in order to become a proficient practitioner.
Work with the senior team to undertake and maintain BSG, Trust and departmental clinical audit cycles in support of quality assurance, patient safety, work force annual reaccreditation for Joint Advisory Group on gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JAG) and clinical governance
Learn to undertake validation of surveillance patients following latest guidance and support the senior Endoscopy team in doing this.
Work in collaboration with the senior team for Endoscopy and support the development of a sustainable pre-assessment service for patients undergoing endoscopic examination. Providing a service to uphold patient safety and compliance, reduce incidence of cancellation and failure to attend on the day.
Work collaboratively to support the Lead Nurse for Endoscopy and senior team to provide, evaluate and audit the inpatient endoscopy pathway in accordance with NICE, BSG and JAG guidance.
Work with colleagues within the Endoscopy Service provision to support nursing expertise to patients with gastrointestinal cancers in line with Improving Outcomes Guidance and contribute to the development of the speciality as well as being able to contribute to the strategic nursing direction within the Trust.
Attend Multidisciplinary meetings within the speciality.
Scope and Accountability
Working within SWFT and Endoscopy guidance, policy and protocols learn to undertake endoscopy procedures and be aware of the associated responsibilities and accountabilities. Clinical decision-making skills and legal accountability must be understood together with the principles of vicarious liability.
Be able once training completed to perform upper or lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, (+/- biopsy/polypectomy) and report on findings according to organisational and national protocols, as an independent autonomous practitioner. To perform therapeutic interventions as per agreed competency level, as agreed by the Clinical Endoscopist.
Job Summary
To train and support in order to the deliver care within the Endoscopy Service, ensuring delivery of the 2-week cancer and 6 diagnostic access targets, as laid out in the NHS Constitution. Working closely with the Clinical Lead, Matron, Qualified Clinical Endoscopist, Charge Nurse for Endoscopy and multi-disciplinary team, ensuring staff provide a high-quality evidence-based service to patients.
Supernumerary status will be given for a minimum of 12 months to enable successful training and achievement of competency. However, there may be times when it is detrimental to the endoscopy service, when we require the trainee Clinical endoscopist to work as part of the team
Learn to identify the need for and request further investigations as appropriate and advise on further investigations as required.
Learn to review, assess and consent patients requiring Endoscopy.
Learn how to influence patient care through clinical practice, management, leadership, education, research, audit and professional activities.
Learn how to provide strong leadership for staff to keep team motivation and encourage staff development.
Assist in work for the units Global Rating Scale process and standards compliance, assisting with maintaining of JAG accreditation
To understand safe sedation techniques and be able to administer safe sedation and analgesia working within agreed protocols (PGDs) and guidelines as set out by the BSG.
To be able to identify abnormalities within the GI tract and perform therapeutic intervention within scope of practice.
To recognise disease, take histology and be able to report accurately the findings of any endoscopic examination.
To instigate appropriate follow up investigations as required and be able to discharge patients using best practice clinical decision-making skills.
To attend a recognised advanced communication course and use those skills to be able to break bad news in with the support of the colorectal CNS team if cancer is detected and appropriately refer to the MDT.
To be able, or willing to undertake training, to assess patients families and populations holistically using a range of methods; this may include physical assessment, history taking, ordering, and interpreting diagnostic tests.
Be fully conversant with BSG and JAG guidelines and be able to participate in the development of nursing practice guidelines, policies, and protocols within the speciality.
Professional Duties
To provide mentorship and preceptorship as required within the endoscopy unit.
To support the senior endoscopy staff and work with the clinical director of endoscopy in ensuring the progressive development of the unit.
To take responsibility for own professional development. To identify own development needs and maintain an up-to-date portfolio to comply with NMC re-validation requirements.
To contribute and participate in local audit and utilise the results to improve practice as required.
To participate in research utilising agreed research findings to enhance patient care and experience.
To ensure that own practice is evidenced based and contributes to the development of nursing practice within own area.
Managerial Duties
To contribute to the effective management of resources within the endoscopy unit to provide a high-quality patient focused service to support the lead nurse for endoscopy and senior team.
Where required to plan, implement, and evaluate healthcare collaboratively with others using approaches that recognise their experience and meet the needs of the client.
To fully integrate with the endoscopy unit, providing best practice and support to the team.
To work collaboratively with Service Manager, Clinical Director of endoscopy, clinical matron and endoscopy lead nurse to evaluate service provision and development of endoscopy services for the future.
Be an active member of the endoscopy strategy group for both upper and lower GI.
Demonstrate awareness of political/ national agendas in own field and be able to work towards implementation.
Support senior team with achieving and maintaining Care Quality Commission Standards for the endoscopy unit.
Organise weekly/ daily routines as required to complement the existing nurse endoscopist work schedule.
Report any untoward circumstances to the lead endoscopy nurse.

To be aware of financial restraints in relation to stock and asset management and be able to support and promote accordingly.
