YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOULL DO

You will work predominantly with the Supportive and Palliative Care team at Southampton General Hospital, working alongside the team to provide symptom control advise and support to patients in the acute hospital. The team sees patients throughout the hospital, including on the critical care units. You will be expected to attend and contribute to daily handover and team discussion, then reviewing patients referred to the team across the hospital. Depending on experience, these reviews will initially be done with another member of the team, but it is envisaged that you will develop their skills and confidence to conduct reviews of new and follow-up patients independently in time. There may also be the opportunity, depending on experience, to take part in the developing outpatient service.

If the service requires, you may be required to work at Mountbatten Hampshire. They will be responsible for the day-to-day management of patients admitted to Mountbatten under the supervision of the Palliative Medicine Consultants and Specialist Doctors. You will work alongside a Specialty Registrar, Speciality Doctor, GP Specialty and FY2 Trainees and will be an integral part of the multidisciplinary ward team. Responsibilities will include attending and contributing to the admissions meeting, daily ward rounds, weekly consultant ward round family meetings, weekly complex patient MDT and M+M meeting, and MES meetings (via remote access to SGH).

In the community team, you will be involved in the care of patients with the Mountbatten community team under the supervision of the Palliative Medicine Consultants and Specialist Doctor. Responsibilities will include conducting domiciliary visits, outpatients, phone support and working with community nurse specialists.

You will be part of the 1 in 6 non-resident 1st on-call rota. The primary role on-call is to be 1st point of contact for support and advice for the clinical team on the ward at Mountbatten Hampshire. When on-call at the weekend, on site attendance at the hospice is expected during the day. The 1st on-call doctor is supported by a 2nd on-call consultant or specialist doctor.

There are opportunities for audit, quality improvement, management experience and teaching.
