Nottingham, United Kingdom Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trusts Full time

Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Fellow in Gastroenterology at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. This post could be a useful contribution to the training of individuals who are seeking specialist registration in Gastroenterology in the UK. The successful applicant will join a cohesive and progressive gastroenterology and hepatology department with a strong clinical and academic national profile. We are looking for a dynamic individual who has completed their core medical training, has clear commitment to the speciality and ideally has experience of working in the aim to deliver an experience as nearly as possible equivalent to that of our SPRs to ease the demonstration of equivalence of training.

There are 3 posts available initially for one year fixed term contracts - one post with immediate start and 2 posts starting from August 2024, but potentially extendable to a maximum of 2 years. To further mirror the experience of SPRs in gastroenterology we are exploring the possibility of rotation to another local trust.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be allocated both in and out-patient sessions in Gastroenterology in blocks and will also contribute to the GIM on call rota. During inpatient blocks, in addition to supporting the daily Consultant ward round, the applicant will provide ongoing review of patients during the working day to allow constant evaluation of care, with the support of our junior doctor ward team. The fellow will also support the on-call Gastroenterology team, reviewing new admissions prior to their arrival on the ward and providing emergency out-patient reviews. Outpatient blocks will be for the delivery of outpatient care and endoscopic sessions may be available dependent upon demand and experience. The GIM rota pattern includes a mix of long days and nights with set roles and responsibilities for each shift including the acute unselected take, being a crash bleep holder as well as experience working in acute stroke, level 1 and the acute respiratory care unit.

About us

The Gastroenterology, Nutrition and Hepatology inpatient beds are located at the QMC campus. Emergency inpatient endoscopies, ERCP, EUS, EMR & RFA are provided from the endoscopy suite at QMC. Out-patient clinics and elective endoscopy are delivered from the Nottingham Treatment Centre on the QMC site.

Although we do not have any in-patient Gastroenterology/Hepatology facilities on the City Hospital Campus, we provide senior GI, Nutrition & Hepatology consultations for other specialty in-patients, and out-patient Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopy and Nutrition services. The Endoscopy unit at NCH provides elective and emergency diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy facilities. It is a designated bowel cancer screening centre.

Dedicated Day Case Gastroenterology services, non-malignant radiology and histopathology MDTs, and administrative support are available on both campuses.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post is designed to deliver the following roles:

Provide in-hours middle grade support to inpatient Gastroenterology areas. Deliver supervised out-patient Gastroenterology activity Deliver independent out-patient endoscopy activity - dependent upon skillset. Contribute to the GIM on call rota

The post holder will be expected to work flexibly and manage their own workload to deliver key milestones in a timely manner.

To enable the post holder to develop within the post beyond their direct clinical role, there will be opportunities for both research and service development activities within the outpatient weeks of the job plan to be adjusted to fit with the needs of the service and the needs and abilities of the appointee.
