DescriptionGordon Murray Automotive is currently seeking a dynamic Senior Structural Analysis Engineer to join its Special Vehicles team based in Shalford. The ideal candidate will be responsible for spearheading structural analysis, guiding the engineering design of our products from concept to detail, liaising with Vehicle Development group and cooperating with the suppliers to provide engineering support on a timely basis.
Key ResponsibilitiesAssessing Strength, Stiffness, Fatigue, and Crash Performance: Structural analysts are responsible for assessing the strength, stiffness, fatigue, and crash performance of parts, assemblies, and full vehicles. This includes conducting both linear static analyses and non-linear analyses using software like Altair's suite of implicit and explicit codes.
Conceptual Analysis and Hand Calculations: Structural analysts support engineering and design groups by conducting conceptual analysis and hand calculations. These methods help develop and validate engineering designs, including topology optimization, multi-body dynamics (MBD), and hand calculations tailored to determine structural performance.
Defining Load Cases: Structural analysts play a crucial role in defining load cases for the entire vehicle and subsystems. This involves identifying and reporting road loads for the vehicle, specifying load cases for each system and subsystem, and collaborating with the vehicle dynamics group.
Attributes Definition and Target Setting: Responsible for defining critical attributes of the whole vehicle and setting high-level and detailed targets. This includes working with the homologation group to determine certification requirements and identifying structurally integral obligations that drive the project workflow across engineering groups.
Tests Definitions and Validation Planning: Define testing activities to objectively measure structural performance at the part, system, and whole vehicle level. This includes defining test schedules, ensuring compliance with attributes and requirements, and reporting results to engineering teams and project stakeholders.
Managing CAE Tasks: Manage Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) tasks by maintaining project documentation, providing regular updates to stakeholders, and preparing comprehensive reports on CAE status and outcomes.
Resource Management: Responsible for resource management, which involves identifying and securing necessary resources for the project, including human capital, time, software, and budgets. Effective resource allocation ensures successful project execution.
Supporting Testing Activities: Support testing activities by ensuring compliance with attributes and requirements, providing guidance to the vehicle development department, and conducting testing activities to validate parts and subsystems using industry-standard methods.
Calculation Tools Generation: Lead the development of calculation tools for repetitive tasks and inspire others to do the same. This includes generating ideas for standardization, developing processes for calculations and design assessment, and improving efficiency in structural analysis.
Correlation: Ensure that the tools, software, and calculation methods used in the design phase correlate with certified data. This ensures that the structural analysis accurately reflects the real-world behaviour of the structure. 
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Bachelor’s/Master’s/PhD in Mechanical/Aerospace/Automotive Engineering (or similar)
  • Experience in Structural Analysis (Stress, Stiffness, Fatigue, Optimisation) in a high-performance automotive/motorsport/aerospace environment
  • Proficiency in simulation tools including Altair’s Hyperworks suite (Hypermesh, Hyperview, Hypergraph, Optistruct, RADIOSS) or experience with similar software
  • Practical knowledge of nCode Design Life software
  • Experience with analysing test data and correlating to CAE results
  • Experience of FEA material characterisation for metallic and composite materials
  • Experience with both concept and matured design, across all vehicle function groups
  • Expert in MS Excel
  • Preferably, experience with a scripting/programming language, e.g. Python or software such as Matlab
