Job summary
*This role requires undertaking shifts Monday- Friday covering the hours between 08:00-17:30. This role does require the cover venepuncture clinics. Experience in this or willingness to train is essential.*
The Maternity Support Worker will work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, supporting trained staff in all aspects of clinical care of mothers and babies.
The post holder is required to undertake tasks involving direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Midwife. The Maternity Support Worker will maintain a high standard of client care, adhering to all Trust and Maternity Services policies and guidelines.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £ This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary
In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £13.
Main duties of the job
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Chaperoning Doctors and Midwives, when necessary, during physical examinations of women. Carry out maternal weight, temperature and pulse checks under midwifery direction and supervision. Venepuncture, including supporting the running of GTT clinics, under direction of a Midwife. Complete investigation forms. Accompanying women to other departments/wards when deemed appropriate by a Midwife. Undertake observations under the direction and supervision of the midwife to include temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, tone and blood glucose. Stocking up rooms and store rooms, reporting any stock issues to the midwife and ensuring rooms remain clean and tidy. Filing and other clerical duties ie collection of notes. Answering telephone and directing patient enquiries to Midwives. Be able to use computer systems to obtain results, book appointments, track notes as directed by the Ward Clerk/Midwife. Attending to all basic hygiene and nutritional needs of mothers and babies. Responsible for daily cleaning and checking of equipment, following training from Midwives. Assisting Midwives during care for service users Health education and parent education as directed by a Midwife. Responsible for the maintenance of a clean and tidy environment in ward and departments. Undertake general housekeeping duties Collection of blood and blood products form blood bank.

Job responsibilities
Work within the ward/department setting, providing high quality, caring, compassionateand personal care to women and their partner. Work under the direction of the Midwife and senior colleagues, both independently and aspart of the multi- disciplinary team. Under the direction of a Midwife ensure a high standard of service provision within ward/department, by practicing effective clinical and administrative preparation, effective communication and care delivery, prioritising workload appropriately and contributing to service improvements Participate in giving compassionate high quality personal care to women prioritising appropriately and developing competencies that safeguard practice. Developcompetencies appropriate to the role. Act always in a manner, which illustrates respect for privacy, dignity, equality, diversity,and confidentiality. Exhibit professional attitude and behaviour and always demonstrate excellent customer care skills. Maintain accurate and timely records. Develop positive relationships with women, partner, and family. Communicate effectively with the women, relatives, midwives and the multidisciplinary team. Welcome and orientate women and visitors to the ward/department. Undertake administrative ward tasks Use communication tools (verbal/ nonverbal) to gain informed consent with women where there will be barriers to effective communication , loss of hearing, altered perception expressive and receptive dysphasia, pain, fears etc. Report information concerning the women that is relevant for their care delivery, and well-being to other members of the team, including Midwives and Coordinator, in a timely manner. Ask for, listen, and value the views of women and their partners on their experience, including complaints, and discuss this with the midwives, coordinator or ward manager in a timely manner. Communicate effectively with dignity and respect to all women and partner. Recognise and report any situations, behaviours or errors that could result in poor care outcomes. Maintain effective working relationships with ward colleagues particularly those highlighted within the organisation chart above Assist in preparing women notes, relevant charts/documentation. Attend ward /departmental meetings as required. Welcome and orientate new staff, women, and visitors to the ward/department.Responsibility for Patient Care
Be responsible for participating and assisting in the delivery of delegated personal care and support to women within the ward/department team according to their individual needs with specific concern for their religious, cultural, and personal preference. Use a range of techniques for infection prevention and control including waste management, hand washing and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Measure and record body fluid balance accurately at midwife request. Assist in preparing women notes, relevant charts/documentation and ensure identity name bands and allergy bands are in place on admission. Undertake clerical duties as directed by the midwife or coordinator to all verbal and written communications, ensuring messages and communications are passed to other team members, in a timely and accurate manner as required. Ensure patients nutritional and hydration needs are met and appropriately documented. Assist midwives when women mobility is compromised, help move and position appropriately to maximise their physical comfort, and prevent tissue damage. Assist midwives in the care of womens skin integrity by observing pressure areas and undertaking actions as appropriate to prevent pressure ulcers, escalating concerns to the midwife in a timely manner, recording and maintaining relevant documentation. Demonstrate a good understanding of consent and ensure valid consent is obtained prior to the undertaking of care procedures. Demonstrate a good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act / Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and apply the principles to everyday practice seeking advice / guidance from the midwife as required. At the delegation of the midwife, transfer the patient from one care area to another, Delivery suite to postnatal ward. Chaperone the women as required ensuring appropriate support. Ensure that all religious and cultural wishes, obligations are adhered with. When necessary, initiate and assist with basic CPR procedures. Perform additional clinical skills as directed by the midwife or coordinator (that have been agreed by the Line Manager) where trained and competent to do so and within the scope of the role. Undertake a range of clinical competencies as directed by the Midwife or coordinator including the undertaking of the women vital signs. Document the findings in women notes and on patient track. Reporting any deviations from the norm to midwife or coordinator Record findings in patients records in real time. Venepuncture under the direction of a midwife. Assist in collection of blood or blood products from the laboratory as required. Under direction of the midwife, perform and record blood glucose levels utilising Trust point of care blood glucose monitoring equipment reporting results to the Midwife. Following the completion of appropriate training and assessment and under the direction of a Midwife undertake Urine testing / urine analysis as per Trust policy, reporting results to the midwife. Assist in providing conditions to meet the patients need for rest and sleep. Prepare and maintain environments for clinical procedures. Assist in maintaining and monitoring cleaning standards within the clinical area Undertake observations on newborn babies under the direction and supervision of the midwife to include temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, colour, tone and blood glucose. Attending and supporting hygiene needs of mothers and babies. Assisting midwives during labour and deliveries of clients. Health education and parent education as directed by a midwife. Acting as a theatre runner during operative procedures. Planning and organising Prioritise own workload Be responsible for planned care and tasks delegated from a Midwife Undertake tasks and workload activities whilst ensuring that their practice is guided by standard operating procedures and established protocol Demonstrate self-directed development to ensure practise is in accordance with established protocols and standard operating procedures under close, but not continuous, supervision. Act always in a manner, which illustrates respect for privacy, dignity, and confidentiality. Have a responsibility to ensure all information processed for patients and staffs is kept confidential, accurate and in line with the data protection act 1998 and Caldecott principles. Contribute to effective team working, by being fully involved, committed, and participating, to achieving full potential. Provide support and supervision to junior staff. Working with the Midwives act as a role model providing guidance and support work colleagues as required, helping to always ensure the efficient and effectiverunning of the ward/department. Contribute to a culture where all staff feel safe to raise their concerns and that speaking up about what these are is a normal part of their routine. Responsibilities for Teaching and Training Demonstrate self-directed development, recognising own limitations, and work within the scope of the role always. Provide health promotion advice to women and their partners, as appropriate. Recognises and consistently works within boundaries of the role and acquire skills and knowledge to develop competencies in service area. Maintain responsibility for the identification of own continuing educational needs and development and take part in annual appraisal. Maintain competence in Statutory and Mandatory, training requirements in adherence to Trust Policy. Attend appropriate training courses and keep up to date with developments within the service area.
