The Maternity Support Worker will work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, supporting trained staff in all aspects of clinical care of mothers and babies.

The post holder is required to undertake tasks involving direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Midwife. The Maternity Support Worker will maintain a high standard of client care, adhering to all Trust and Maternity Services policies and guidelines.

The Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and promote safeguarding by implementing the Trust’s policies and procedures, acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively and sharing information appropriately.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £41.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary

In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £13.

Main

**Responsibilities**:
1. Chaperoning Doctors and Midwives, when necessary, during physical examinations of women.
2. Carry out maternal weight, temperature and pulse checks under midwifery direction and supervision.
3. Venepuncture, under direction of a Midwife.
4. Complete investigation forms.
5. Accompanying women to other departments/wards when deemed appropriate by a Midwife.
6. Undertake observations on newborn babies under the direction and supervision of the midwife to include temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, colour, tone and blood glucose.
7. Stocking up rooms and store rooms, reporting any stock issues to the midwife and ensuring rooms remain clean and tidy.
8. Filing and other clerical duties ie collection of notes.
9. Answering telephone and directing patient enquiries to Midwives.
10. Be able to use computer systems to obtain results, book appointments, track notes as directed by the Ward Clerk/Midwife.
11. Attending to all basic hygiene and nutritional needs of mothers and babies.
12. Responsible for daily cleaning and checking of equipment, following training from Midwives.
13. Assisting Midwives during labour and deliveries of clients.
14. Health education and parent education as directed by a Midwife.
15. Responsible for the maintenance of a clean and tidy environment in ward and departments.
16. Undertake general housekeeping duties, eg bed making, clients’ meals etc.
17. Acting as theatre runner during operative procedures.
18. Collection of blood and blood products form blood bank.

- Under the direction of a Midwife ensure a high standard of service provision within ward/department, by practicing effective clinical and administrative preparation, effective communication and care delivery, prioritising workload appropriately and contributing to service improvements
- Participate in giving compassionate high quality personal care to women prioritising appropriately and developing competencies that safeguard practice. Develop competencies appropriate to the role.
- Act always in a manner, which illustrates respect for privacy, dignity, equality, diversity,and confidentiality.
- Exhibit professional attitude and behaviour and always demonstrate excellent customer care skills.
- Contribute to effective team working by being fully involved, committed, and participating, to achieving own and others full potential.
