The role is a mixture of elective daytime Anaesthesia cases and resident full shift work providing emergency Anaesthesia services including nights and weekends. You will provide an anaesthetics service to Main Theatres, Day Surgery, Obstetrics, Intensive Care and Acute Pain.

This role is suited to doctors wishing to progress their careers and may wish to achieve FRCA or Membership of the Royal College or Anaesthetists or Membership of the Faculty of Intensive Care FFICM exam stages.

The department is relaxed, friendly and values work life balance. We perform approximately 18,000 operations each year with 750 Critical Care admissions (approx. 200 level 3).

Main duties of the job

You will take part in the middle tier SAS annualised rota and deal with emergencies in the Emergency department and provide timely support to the junior doctors.

You must be comfortable working independently with distant supervision.

You will provide Anaesthetic services to Main Theatres, Day Surgery, Obstetrics and Intensive Care.

You must have a minimum of 4 years experience working as an Anaesthetist and in Intensive Care (ICU) toperform the initial stabilisation and safe intubation of ICU patients. The airway control is the responsibility of the Anaesthetists when working on-call.

You must have a recognised UK or EU resuscitation lifesaving qualification, such as ATLS, ALS or ETC (European Trauma Course)and hold full GMC registration with a licence to practice at the time of applying for this role.

The contract will be for 12 PA's per week including working evening, nights and weekends. This will include one Supporting PA (SPA) and allows time for pre-op and post-op visits.

There is usually scope for additional work if desired as the programmed working week is not onerous.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Experienced Anaesthetist for the normal range of surgical specialties and provide an Anaesthetic services to Main Theatres, Day Surgery, Obstetrics and Intensive Care.

Ability to work in Intensive Care. This post requires successful Anaesthesia applicants to be able to perform the initial stabilisation and intubation of ICU patients. Whilst there are other Junior Doctors on duty to assist with the medical care of ICU patients, the airway control and safe intubation of ICU patients is the responsibility of the Anaesthetists when on-call.

Additional experience, specifically in Obstetric Anaesthesia. The post holder must be able to deliver safe Anesthesia for caesarian sections, working relatively independently. The post holder must also be able to perform safe epidural analgesia for labour and childbirth, working relatively independently.

To have a recognised UK or EU resuscitation and lifesaving qualification, such as ATLS, ALS or ETC (European Trauma Course) at time of applying. Those without a current resuscitation qualification, or with a none-UK/EU qualification, will be required to successfully pass a UK/EU resuscitation course within six-months of appointment, in order to continue in their role. The requirement for a UK/EU resuscitation qualification is in order to maintain an objective and independent standard of clinical and communication skills, to enhance patient safety.

To participate in the teaching of Foundation and Junior Doctors at the bedside as well as to Medical Students.

To maintain a good working relationship with existing staff members in the hospital.

To attend other hospitals within the Trust if so requested by the supervising Consultant.

Will undertake, exceptionally, additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

The post holders professional progress will be reviewed annually by the supervisory Consultant.

Successful applicants will usually be given an introductory period of working alongside a Consultant Anaesthetist in order to gain local familiarity, and to be assessed for safe clinical performance. This period is typically around 4 weeks, but can vary according to individual experience. After this initial period is completed, the post holder will work more independently, including working on-call shifts for emergency work. To continue in the role, applicants must successfully complete the introductory period, and be able to work safely with a degree of independence.

Minimum of 4 years' experience working as an Anaesthetist post medical degree Demonstrate ability to complete ASA I-III theatre cases relatively independently, including caesarian section Anaesthesia, and labour epidurals.
