An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional candidate looking to join a talented and committed team within our Swindon Integrated Sexual Health Department (SWISH) as a Sexual Health Advisor.

Main duties of the job

You will be flexible in your approach when supporting patients with diverse and complex health requirements. You will nurture a non-judgmental culture and have a friendly and approachable attitude when dealing with sexual health patients.

We are seeking a candidate who thrives in a team setting and can demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, good sexual health knowledge and a strong awareness of associated issues. Previous experience of Health Advising or nursing within sexual health would be an advantage to your application however this is not essential.

The role is based at Swindon Health Centre but working across sites may be required.

To be aware of the confidential nature of the clinic and work within the legal responsibilities as laid down in the Venereal Diseases Regulations (1916, 1974) and the NHS Trusts and Primary Care Trusts (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) Directions 2000 To work within frameworks of good practice according to national organisations ( BASHH and SSHA) To utilise opportunities to participate in formal and informal teaching To work within and contribute to service operational procedures developed by SWISH To work effectively within the multidisciplinary team to facilitate the best care for patients To establish and maintain good working relationships with professionals from other departments to enable partner notification and effective referral pathways

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Registered Nurse (1st level) or CQSW/ Diploma Social Work OR A relevant degree: psychology, health, science, social sciences, health promotion, education

Desirable

A counselling qualification at certificate level A relevant higher qualification relevant to the role a MSC in counseling, health promotion/ public health Sexual and reproductive health BASHH competencies

Experience

Essential

Significant post qualifying experience Experience of working in a sexual health setting Counseling skills experience with patients either face to face or by telephone Experience of sexual health education / promotion with individuals and within a group setting Experience of multi-disciplinary team working Experience of managing safeguarding issues with young people and vulnerable adults Experience of delivering high standards of patient care Experience of working with diverse needs Experience of working in a complex healthcare environment

Desirable

Experience as a Health Adviser Experiences of teaching and lecturing Experience of working within patient group directions (PGD) Working knowledge of legal frameworks associated with confidentiality within sexual health

Knowledge

Essential

Knowledge of the confidential nature of testing for sexual infections To have a working knowledge of clinical and psychosocial aspects of Sexually Transmitted Infections, HIV or related sexual health issues Knowledge of safeguarding legislation and local policies relation to vulnerable service users (including young people) Able to communicate effectively around sensitive issues using a variety of media Ability to adapt communication approach to meet the needs of diverse complex patients Flexible in approach to working and able to adapt to changing situations Ability to work autonomously Ability to work effectively under pressure Organised and able to prioritise tasks and workload Accurate with a high level of attention to detail
