Job summary

The maternity Services at King's have a reputation for women-centred care. Key strengths in the service are involving women in decisions about their care and supporting informed choice throughout pregnancy and in the postnatal period, overseeing and implementing a range of models of midwifery care which enable high quality care provision to women and families from vulnerable groups and the provision of a seamless service between the hospital and community.

As Matron you will be a highly visible member of the service's team, supported by the Head and the Director of Midwifery. The Matron is an influential role and recognised as being a key component to the delivery of the Maternity strategy. The Matron will work closely within a team of matrons. The matron should be someone who treats all colleagues with equal respect, and is inclusive and democratic. The Matron role also requires the skills and experience to manage staff ensuring the continuous delivery of efficient and effective services.

As a member of the leadership team, you will be responsible for advancing change in four main areas of impact - quality, patient experience, finance and efficiency, and leadership and skills development.

Main duties of the job

Work collaboratively with all stakeholders in the maternity services to deliver the Maternity strategy.

Act as a positive role model providing expert clinical advice and support promoting a woman and family centre approach to maternity care.

Have excellent communication skills.

Manage and respond to complaints.

Oversee budgets and ensure appropriate provision and care for the management of resources for midwifery and support staff, consumables and environment.Oversee and contribute to patient safety management working closely with the governance teams and using the Trust approach to PSIRF.

Create and sustain efficient care processes that provide high quality clinical care.

Have the skills to asses and monitor care provided and have the knowledge to be able to report this in a way which provides assurance to the senior leadership team.

Actively engage with improvement in the service using recognised quality improvement methods.

Be efficient to monitor and enact HR processes such as sickness absence management, disciplinary procedures, recruitment and retention of staff including succession planning.

Create a supportive environment in which training, coaching and practice development needs are accurately identified and progressed through agreed structures, appraisals, PDPs and performance management.

Job responsibilities

Work with the Lead Midwife for Workforce and Education, and the team leaders in the community in assessing the clinical skills required to deliver a safe and quality service, identify deficits and develop programmes to address the issues.

Work closely with the Lead Midwife for Workforce and Education to develop maternity support workers role in the community service in accordance with national recommendations.

Investigate patient and staff safety incidents in a fair and equitable way utilising trust PSIRF methodology, in conjunction with the maternity governance team.

Maintain an overview of the standards of care delivered in the community and take immediate action to remedy failures or refer to the Director of Midwifery.

Be responsible for ensuring the Health and Safety measures are implemented and adhered to.

Person Specification

Qualification, Experience and Skills

Essential

Registered Midwife Evidence of substantial clinical experience and ability to function at level required of the post. Demonstrable commitment to and expertise in midwifery Current Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor

Desirable

PMA Knowledge of standard setting and audit process.
