Job summary

Student Midwife (Shortened Course)

Determine and provide programmes of care and support for women which:

Are appropriate to the needs, contexts, culture and choices of the women, babies and their families. Are made in partnership with women. Are ethical. Are based on best evidence and clinical judgement. Involve other practitioners when this will improve health outcomes. Care for and monitor women during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal period, offering the necessary evidence-based advice and support on baby and self-care.

Provide seamless care and interventions in partnership with women and other care providers during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period which:

Are appropriate for women's assessed needs, context and culture. Promote their continuing health and wellbeing. Are evidence-based. Are consistent with the management of risk. Draw on the skills of others to optimise health outcomes and resource use.

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities: Clinical

To attain a registered midwifery qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of the United Kingdom. To communicate effectively with women and their families throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal stages under the supervision of the Registered Midwife. To diagnose pregnancy, assess and monitor women holistically throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal stages through the use of a range of assessment methods and reach valid, reliable and comprehensive conclusions under the supervision of the Registered Midwife. To work towards achievement of the standards of proficiency for midwives that are contained in the Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA) practice assessment documents and set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. To work towards achieving experience under supervision of the activities of the midwife as outlined in the European Union Midwives Directive (80/155/EEC Article 4). Person Specification

Education and Qualification

Essential

oActive registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse (Adult) first level status. This must be maintained to meet the NMC revalidation requirements for the duration of the course. oA Degree or Diploma in Higher Education or 60 level 5 credits.

Experience and knowledge

6 months full time post registration (or equivalent) experience within the last 2 years. Worked in a variety of settings utilising transferable skills.
