Job summary

This post is designed to help those interested in a career in Orthopaedics to develop their skills and experience before entry into specialist training. The clinical duties of this post are equivalent to a FY2/CT1/CT2 Level Doctor. The postholders will have the opportunity to develop their operative, audit and research skills at one of the most prestigious dedicated orthopaedic units in the UK.

Candidates must hold a valid ALS certificate.

Main duties of the job

This post is a Foundation Year 2 Deanery gap. The appointee is to start as soon as possible until 6th August 2024. The post holder will work as part of a team with surgeons led by consultants. The duties will be to cover the specialities of Hip and Knee and a crosscover into the subspecialities of orthopaedic subspecialities, Rheumatology, Rehabilitation and Spinal. Daily support to the orthopaedic services in carrying out the daily ward rounds, patient admissions, orthopaedic POAC out-patient clinics, and opportunities for operating theatre sessions.

There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements.

The Junior Doctor will be required to work a duty rota. The current rota is a 1:15 full shift F2/CT/IMT/GPvts tier rota. The post holder will work alongside the foundation-tier doctors, SpR3-8 on the orthopaedic wards and be responsible for sharing the ward workload. The appointee will need to hold a valid ALS certificate from the start of their contract.

Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre John Radcliffe Hospital (Major trauma centre) Churchill Hospital Horton Hospital

The centre is housed on the same grounds as the Botnar Research Institute- leading experts in the field of musculoskeletal research. It also has clinical and research links with the John Radcliffe Hospital Trauma department. All three centres receive support from NIHR and the Medical Research Council.

We provide a service for the clinical management of musculoskeletal problems encompassing Orthopaedics, Sarcoma and Bone Oncology, Rheumatology, Rehabilitation and a specialised diagnostic and interventional service in Histopathology and Medical Imaging.

There are 3 orthopaedic in-patient wards, 1 in-patient bone infection unit, HDU/Recovery with an overall total of 196 beds, 8 operating theatres and a purpose built day surgery unit. The hospital averages 5000 admissions each year. It has no emergency department but is a tertiary referral centre for specialist orthopaedics and physical rehabilitation.

This post is governed by the terms and conditions of service for NHS doctors and dentists in Training (England) refresh 2018.

The post requires the occupant to be resident during on-call periods.

Normal working day: 0800-1700

Long day emergency bleep holder: 0800-2100

Weekend emergency bleep holder: Sat/Sun 0800-1700 or 0800-2100

Nights: 2030-0830

The post-holder must hold full registration with the General Medical Council.

The post-holder must hold a valid ALS certificate on appointment.

Salary Grade: Nodal Point 2 MT02 local appointment grade code.

MB BS or equivalent completed pre-registration year Training in the initial assessment and care of the acutely ill patient Current full GMC registration with licence to practice ALS valid certificate NHS Experience

Knowledge

Appropriate knowledge of basic orthopaedics. Ability and willingness to learn from all sources. Knowledge of own limitations. Sound basic clinical skills. Competent in history taking and examination skills. Achievement of Foundation Programme 1 competencies
