The post holder will work with the PACU Team Leader and Perioperative Practice Education Team to identify and promote evidence based clinical practice within the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit. You will be responsible for creating a positive learning environment, encouraging reflective practice through the implementation of clinically based teaching & education that enables PACU practitioners to achieve continuing professional & personal development goals.You will provide clinical and managerial support to the PACU Team Leader, providing clinical leadership, support and advice to colleagues and managing PACU in the absence of the Team Leader. You will work with the PACU Team Leader, Theatre Managers, theatre coordinators and Perioperative Practice Education Team in providing specialist advice and guidance to other personnel. You will work clinically to provide direct care for complex level one (e.g. immediate post-operative patients) and level two patients, (e.g. High Dependency and major surgery). This post will be a 50/50 split between Education and Clinical
Main duties of the job
To create a positive learning environment and promote a culture of reflective practice to underpin learning, providing feedback and educational counselling to nursing staff in relation to their professional & personal development; in conjunction with the PACU Team Leader and PACU Band 6s; to assist staff in formulating personal development plans and portfolios. Lead in the development and implementation of the PACU education pathway and education across the wider Theatres department, in order to ensure all staff are equipped with the right skills and knowledge, using initiative and discretion to manage workload independently. Act as a resource for staff, offer tuition, support and guidance to perioperative staff and students, appropriately challenging poor practice sensitively, escalating and documenting as required. Deputise for the Team Leader by planning and organising the clinical activity on a regular basis with responsibility for the day-to-day management of a group of staff, prioritising and planning elective and emergency patient care within the perioperative environment. Maintain own specialist clinical knowledge & skills. Disseminate accurate and pertinent information to PACU practitioners and the wider perioperative team, fostering the philosophy of evidence based practice, analysing, interpreting and implementing research findings, to ensure effective and innovative nursing practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Lead in the development and implementation of the PACU education pathway and education across the wider Theatres department, in order to ensure all staff are equipped with the right skills and knowledge, using initiative and discretion to manage workload independently. Deputise for the Team Leader by planning and organising the clinical activity on a regular basis with responsibility for the day-to-day management of a group of staff, prioritising and planning elective and emergency patient care within the perioperative environment. Work collaboratively with the departmental practice educators within all theatre departments, to promote cohesive consistent best practice and share resources, ideas and knowledge, identifying education and professional development requirements of new staff and existing staff. Supervise the maintenance of the statutory and mandatory training required by practitioners working in PACU. Assist with the standardisation and maintenance of accurate data records according to Trust policy. Work alongside PACU Team Leader/perioperative practice education / Theatre Managers and theatre Team Leaders to develop standards and guidelines to support training and development of staff. Assist PACU Team Leader in the general recruitment of staff for PACU and in particular the recruitment of staff for educational programmes, developing the education pathway for new PACU practitioners. Attend mandatory training updates as required. Participate in the Trust’s appraisal process to discuss how your role will help deliver the best possible care to our patients and help to deliver any changes in service. Identify own learning needs and jointly plan training requirements with your line manager At no time should the post holder work outside their defined level of competence. If the post holder has concerns regarding this they should immediately discuss this with their Team Leader/manager

Evidence of completion of an accredited/non-accredited PACU course Substantial PACU or Critical Care experience with extensive experience in high dependency post anaesthetic care e.g. the administration of IV opioids and noradrenaline Completion of Practice Supervisor/ Practice Assessor or teaching and assessing qualification
Desirable criteria
Post Graduate Certificate In Health and Education (PGCert) OR Willing to work towards completion within 18-24 months Experience of preparing and facilitating teaching sessions Completion of a leadership course Experience in quality improvement initiative
